The gardens as of late:

It's official, our bean harvest has begun! Dragon Tongue Beans are currently available, so you can message me to reserve some for pick up.🌱

Our blueberry patch just gets better and better! Only in its second year, we've harvested so many and there are more still on their way. While there's not nearly enough to be able to share with you, I can only imagine how many we'll have when these plants reach maturity!🫐

Zucchini is well on its way, too. We are growing a new-to-us variety, Yellowfin, in addition to the usual green variety. These golden beauties only get to be about 6" long, meaning they are much less seedy and woody compared to some green varieties that tend to grow 3x sizes too big overnight.

The greenhouse is an absolute chaotic jungle, and I am in love. The luffa squash are way ahead compared to last year, and it's looking much more promising that we are going to have luffa sponges this year -and a lot of them! The artichokes are taking off, and we're harvesting the first of our jalapeños (which we grew so many of, so they will likely be available for purchase in the near future).🫑

It's that time of year when the gardens are filling in and looking lush, and so the harvesting begins. 🧺

Yet again, somehow we've managed to expand our gardens to make room for more variety, new things to try growing, and larger quantities for preserving (or sharing with the community!) 👥

So far this year, we've dabbled in some new kitchen experiments and created some really stellar seasoning salts to use up the remainder of last year's garlic harvest, and wild leeks harvested this spring. They are the perfect splash of flavour for any dish! We've also discovered our fave drink for the summer, which is a simple Iced Tea made with a Summer Fruit Herbal Tea steeped with lemon balm (occasionally we'll add some prosecco). As usual, we've been cooking up some quiche too!

What are some of your favorite recipes that include things you grow in the garden or forage? 🍄🌾

Currently available:
Garlic Scapes 🧄
Rhubarb 🥧
Eggs 🥚
Lettuce Mix 🥬

Message me for pricing and pick-up times!🗓

Garden Updates! ✨️

While some things are starting to wither, others continue growing during the shift in the seasons. We've got some really great harvests this year, including some more recent harvests of squash and peppers.

Golden Nugget Squash:

This was a new variety for us to grow. We were drawn to it mainly because it grows bushy (like a zucchini) rather than a large vine like other squash varieties that tend to take up a lot of real estate. Our only regret? Not planting more. This is hands down one of our new favorite squashes, so you can expect to see more of this one next year so we can have enough to share its goodness! 🤎

Peppers:

We had our doubts with the peppers this year. We decided to try growing them in the greenhouse because they love the heat, but things got a little bit too toasty in there. We have since resolved the scorching heat by installing some fans to get some air flow going through, but the heat caused the peppers to be stunted for quite some time. They ended up recovering eventually and had a bit of a growth spurt, producing some lovely, fragrant peppers, and they are continuing to do so!

Eggs:

All my lovely ladies 🐔 are laying now, so eggs will be more frequently available - all you gotta do is ask! Things are winding down for the season in the vegetable gardens, so offerings will be limited for the rest of this growing season (with the exception of eggs).

A glimpse of what's in bloom in our gardens. As we are really starting to feel the shift in the seasons, so are the gardens. While some things are slowly withering away, others are just starting to shine bright with pops of colour. Ornamental grasses are starting to showcase their plumes, drifts of rudbeckia are multiplying, and hydrangeas are kissed with shades of pink.

When it comes to flowers, the more the merrier. They keep all our garden pollinators well fed, which in turn helps our vegetable gardens thrive with abundance. I used to never bother with annuals because of the cost, but have since changed my mind and started to grow more from seed this year, which was much more economical. They add a pop of colour all season long, make great cut flowers, and the variety is endless.

You can never really have too many flowers, right?🌻

Funny story:

This spring, we sowed all our seeds as we usually do. For some reason, our Cucumber seeds just never took off (perhaps it was an old pack). We noticed that we had Cucumbers sprouting in our compost pile, so we decided to transfer them into the garden. Fast forward ... turns out, it was Acorn Squash that sprouted in our compost.

So here we are, with an abundance of Acorn Squash. I won't have any Cucumbers to pickle, but it's a happy accident. We will now have Acorn Squash that will store wonderfully throughout the winter.

We were a bit late planting our other squash varieties. Some are just starting to produce now, so we should be able to get a good amount before the frost comes. Our Zucchini plants are still producing, and our Gold Nugget Squash (a new-to-us variety) is producing a lot of fruit right now, and we're excited to do a taste test! We are excited to share with you some of the other varieties we've been trying out this season, but more on that once they have produced something to show you!

This morning was spent out in the gardens, taking photos of what's in bloom and the various textures they have to offer. Something I feel like I don't do enough of, and I wish to make it something I do more regularly.

This afternoon, we set out into the woods (despite the pouring rain) to forage for some blackberries, and we returned with more than we set out for! We came across some lovely chantrelles and an always remarkable find, Chicken of the Woods. I am easily excited when we find this incredible mushroom, as it's not very common to come across these vibrant beauties.

Hey everyone!👋

My name is Jess, co-owner of Spring Lake Acres. I am an avid gardener, potter, hiker, floral enthusiast, crazy chicken lady, and a dog mom. Needless to say, I keep very busy between gardening, potting and entertaining our pup -but love every minute of it!

I have been gardening for over 10 years now, and I'm still learning new things every single day! I like to experiment with various growing methods, and love to try growing new and exciting varieties of plants. What I've learned over the years, is that there is never just one solution or method for any garden task -but it's more about what works for YOU! Did I learn a lot the hard way? Yes, absolutely! But sometimes, that is the best way to learn what works, and what doesn't. You gotta put in the time for the things you enjoy doing and learning about, and the results will be mind blowing!✨

When you come by to pick up an order, you are more than welcome to ask for a tour of our gardens, ask questions, say hello to the chickens, or shop in my pottery studio.
