Now that the sun is starting to shine again and the nights are warming up, the gardening "rubber" is about to meet the road! We here at Sea Spray are big believers in organic best practices. But if you are new to organic growing and used to old fashioned 10-10-10 granular fertilizers? Well, new soil inputs can be a bit overwhelming. So today we want to spotlight a lesser known but super valuable soil amendment and that is alfalfa meal!! Alfalfa meal is an under the radar rockstar for the home gardener.

A nitrogen source β€” releases ~2-3% N slowly as it breaks down, feeding plants without burning roots. 🌱

Triacontanol β€” a natural plant growth stimulant found in alfalfa that boosts photosynthesis, root growth, and overall vigor.

Balanced NPK β€” roughly 2-1-2, so it delivers phosphorus and potassium alongside nitrogen.

Trace minerals β€” calcium, magnesium, iron, and other micronutrients.

Improves soil structure β€” organic matter loosens clay and helps sandy soils retain moisture.

Feeds soil microbiology β€” sugars and proteins fuel bacteria, fungi, and earthworms.

Stimulates compost piles β€” high protein content acts as a "green" activator, heating piles up fast!

Slow-release β€” breaks down over weeks, so less leaching than synthetic fertilizers.

It is pH neutral β€” won't shift soil acidity significantly.

Safe for most plants β€” particularly loved by roses, tomatoes, peppers, and fruit trees.

Affordable β€” cheaper per pound than many specialty organic fertilizers, especially if bought as livestock feed pellets.

Tip: use sparingly (around 1-2 cups per established shrub, or Β½ cup per square foot in beds) β€” too much can heat up as it decomposes and temporarily tie up nitrogen.

When we started out we were nothing more than a "brain nugget". But we knew one thing above all else, if we were going to be successful it would take a village. And let us tell you, that village has been showing up. From Will Gilligan at The Old No.7 working his trivia magic, to Michelle Madley at Webber's hosting our first ever Seed Starting workshop, to volunteers digging in the dirt and raising their hands to do more, the people on the Eastern Shore have shown up with love, support, ideas, and all things in between. But today? Today we want to say thank you to Jeff Quigley at Quigley Creative. Jeff, your talent is only outmatched by your heart. When we said we needed a logo? And we had no money lol! You didn't hesitate. This man is a pro on every level and we cannot say thank you enough πŸ™ And we think you nailed it.

Wandering the garden coffee in hand and listening to the birds is one of our favourite morning rituals. Why does birdsong make us feel so calm? 🐦🌿

From an evolutionary perspective, birdsong has long signaled something important to humans: safety. Our ancestors learned that when birds were singing, the environment was likely peaceful β€” no predators nearby, no storms approaching, and daylight conditions were stable. A quiet forest could mean danger, but a chorus of chirping birds meant it was safe to relax, gather food, and connect with others. Choose your metaphor πŸ˜‰

Today, our brains still respond to those natural cues. Listening to birdsong can help lower stress, improve mood, and gently bring us back to the present moment. Nature has been supporting human wellness for thousands of years.

Do yourself a favour today and grab a snack, sit on a bench in a garden or under your feeders in the sunshine and let the birds sooth your buzzing nervous systems. We could all use the break 🫢

What a great article! Planting a short season potato super early allows you to dig them fully and succession plant a whole whack of other crops before the first frost. Broccoli, carrots, lettuce, beets are just a few of the things you can replace your potatoes with. It's a fantastic way to maximize food production in small spaces!

Even though you may be planning ahead for your vegetable garden now, it's a good idea to also think ahead. For example, if you dug your potato crop early enough in the growing season, you may have time left to establish a second crop in the garden. Here's what you can plant after potatoes. https://savvygardening.com/what-to-plant-after-potatoes/

In typical gardener fashion, we always seem to be one step behind all things not "garden" this time of year. We would be remiss however to not congratulate our vice chair and Master Gardener Tracey Smyth on another successful presentation at the Musquodoboit Harbour Public Library last Saturday. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive!

Keep your eyes peeled for her next presentation on how to tackle common garden pests πŸͺ²πŸ›πŸͺ²

It's the end of an "era"! The Sea Spray Board wants to give a serious shout out to our student placement Robyn Dearman. We stumbled into this relationship about three months ago via a random Facebook message looking for potential volunteers or board members and what happen next was pure kismet! Robyn was not only interested in being involved but was in need of an eight week placement for her Community Development degree!

Eight weeks later? Robyn has an A+ and we got social media help, grant applications, research, proposals, program planning, fundraising outreach and best of all??? A brand new board member! Robyn may be leaving us as a student but will stay on to help with youth initiatives and other projects. And we couldn't be more thrilled. Robyn, you have been a pure gem and such a benefit to this feisty start up. We are so very grateful 😊
