It’s Feijoa flowering time!

06/08/2026

This is the hardiest Australian
Tea Tree we grow. It’s shaken off all winters in the last 6 years in the PNW. It’s covered in masses of tiny white pollinator friendly flowers for a few weeks starting in late May.
Leptospermum “Squiggly” will be available very soon. Contact us to save one for you.

Buddleja ‘Orange Sceptre’

At first glance it doesn’t look like a typical butterfly bush. The flowers are a vibrant orange rather than the more familiar purple, pink, or white shades most gardeners associate with buddlejas.

What has impressed us most is its exceptionally long flowering season. In our garden, it often begins blooming in spring and can continue flowering right into late fall, even shrugging off a light frost.

Bees, butterflies, and other pollinators visit the flowers constantly, and the plant itself has proven remarkably tough and drought tolerant once established.

As an added bonus, we’ve recently discovered that it also makes an excellent cut flower, bringing that unusual colour indoors as well.

We’ll have this plant available in the coming weeks. Feel free to contact us if you’re looking for an outstanding flowering shrub that offers something a little different from the ordinary.

ANOTHER one of the most dependable hummingbird plants in the garden has been Salvia darcyi.

Native to the mountains of Mexico, this outstanding perennial produces brilliant scarlet-red flowers over an exceptionally long season, often blooming from summer right through until frost. While many plants attract occasional hummingbird visits, Salvia darcyi is one of those rare plants that seems to have hummingbirds checking in every other minute throughout the day.

For gardeners hoping to attract more hummingbirds, these are one of several plants we would recommend highly.

Perhaps one of the most unusual perennials we grow is Chocolate Foxglove (Digitalis parviflora).

Native to the mountains of northern Spain, this distinctive perennial produces tall spikes packed with hundreds of rich chocolate-brown/coppery flowers. The colour is unlike almost anything else in the garden and tends to stop visitors in their tracks when it comes into bloom.

So far, we find it to be a tough and reliable perennial in Pacific Northwest gardens, pairing beautifully with grasses, salvias, Mediterranean plants, and other drought-tolerant favourites. The evergreen foliage provides year-round interest, while the dramatic flower spikes add a strong architectural presence in late spring and early summer.

We have some 1 gallon pots of this beauty available. Contact us or use this marketplace link:

One of our goals at Arc Plants is to highlight exceptional plants that remain largely unknown to local gardeners. Many of these species have proven to be remarkably well adapted to Pacific Northwest conditions.

The MOST VISITED HUMMINGBIRD magnet plant in our garden is Chilean Glory Vine (Eccremocarpus scaber).

Despite growing dozens of hummingbird plants, this vine is visited constantly throughout summer and fall, covering itself in hundreds of brilliant orange-red flowers - which appear from late March through to winter.

One of the most underused perennial hummingbird plants for Pacific Northwest gardens is Lobelia laxiflora var. angustifolia.

Contact us to get a hold of this one. We have lots.

Native to parts of Mexico and Central America, this distinctive perennial produces spikes of narrow tubular flowers in shades of orange, red, and yellow that draws in all the hummingbirds. While many flowering perennials offer only a few weeks of colour, this species can bloom for months, providing a reliable nectar source through much of the growing season.

What makes this plant especially valuable in our region is its combination of toughness and performance. Once established, it is surprisingly drought tolerant, returns reliably year after year, and asks for very little maintenance. The upright stems and narrow foliage also give it a unique architectural quality that pairs well with Mediterranean-style plantings, gravel gardens, and mixed borders.

Our experience with this plant has been overwhelmingly positive. It has proven to be fully hardy in our gardens, returning each spring and flowering heavily through summer and into fall. Few perennials combine such a long bloom season, such consistent hummingbird activity, and such ease of cultivation.

For gardeners looking to support pollinators while adding months of colour to the landscape, Lobelia laxiflora var. angustifolia deserves a place near the top of the list.
