You don’t need a farm or even a garden to grow potatoes!

Right now, the McKenzie potato bags are on sale for $10 at the Home Hardware in 100 Mile. I bought some eight years ago, and they are still going strong. (Unlike my New Year's resolutions, which usually last eight days).

Why these bags are a lazy gardener's dream:

Zero shoveling: At harvest time, you literally just dump the bag over. No digging, no back pain, no accidental potato stabbing.

The "Sneak Peek" window: They have a built-in Velcro flap. You can literally reach in, steal a few potatoes for tonight’s dinner, and let the rest of the plant to keep working.

Renter-friendly: Perfect if you run out of yard space or have a landlord (or non-gardening spouse) who frowns upon you converting the front lawn into a local agricultural hub.

No drowning: They drain perfectly. Even if you overwater them in a fit of panic, your spuds won't rot.

Who is growing their potatoes in a potato bags this year?

🌸 Cariboo Chaos Gardening Win! 🌸

If you aren’t chaos gardening with McKana Giant Columbines (Aquilegia) yet, this is your sign to start!
They are officially one of my absolute absolute favorite columbines to grow from seed.

Why they are perfect for our Cariboo climate:

Zone 3 Tough: They handle our brutal winters like absolute absolute champs.

Pollinator Royalty: The massive, long-spurred flowers are a total magnet for local hummingbirds and bumblebees.

The Ultimate Chaos Plant: They self-seed effortlessly. The picture below is volunteer that popped up in my greenhouse.

Because they cross-pollinate, every new generation mutates into a surprise tapestry of new color combos!

Quick Tip for Cariboo Success:
Columbine seeds need a winter freeze to wake up. The easiest "chaos" method? Simply scatter the seeds on bare soil in late autumn right before the snow flies. No digging, no burying—just let winter do the work for you!

Japanese Beetles....they are not here yet but they have made their way to Kamloops!

They are extremely invasive and destructive to our plants and gardens. If you are buying plants in Kamloops right now, please protect our community by taking this crucial step:
Only purchase plants from licensed garden centres. Why this matters:

Certified Stock: Licensed nurseries undergo strict inspections to ensure plants are pest-free.

Stop the Spread: Buying from unlicensed vendors or unverified online setups risks bringing these destructive pests into your yard.

Protect Your Community: A single infestation can devastate local ecosystems and neighborhood gardens.

Spread the word and protect our beautiful green spaces!

During routine pest surveillance in 2024 conducted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), a low number of Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica) were detected in Kamloops. Japanese beetles are a federally regulated and quarantined pest in Canada under the Plant Protection Act. If left unmanage...

MICRO TOMATO UPDATE!

I’m currently eating fresh homegrown tomatoes while the rest of the Cariboo is still negotiating with the frost. ❄️

Is it "cheating" to grow micro tomatoes indoors under LED lights? Maybe.

Does "cheating" taste delicious? Absolutely.

That being said, I m starting another round of seeds soon that will be relegated to life on the deck once the danger of frost clears, just to keep this tomato train rolling!
