Suint fermentation day 5. No bubble action yet. Aroma is not what I expected. I was prepared for hydrogen sulphide and methane aka rotten eggs and farts. This is more like the aftermath of super extended long mix sexy time, so say, sweet polysaccharides and protein? Climate is throwing all the heat at it over the next few days so we’ll see where we’re at after day 7.

The great experiment has begun. Fleece is from Charlotte, a local sheep. Sewed up a large draw string bag from indestructible net curtains with mismatched shoe laces as the string. Tote is behind the garden shed away from where anyone hangs out (except the raccoons, maybe the smell will keep them away). Water is from the rain barrel. Managed to get the hose to reach. Didn’t know if there would be enough of a drop to get the water up the gentle incline to the back corner of the yard, turns out yes, the single cinder block the rain barrel is on top of provides sufficient height. Now we wait a week. Glad for the heat wave coming our way to kick start this fermentation.

Pond progress - at the underlayment stage.

Began with the stockpile of cardboard I had stashed at the side of the house (because you never know?) to cover the area around the pond up to over the edges. Once the pond is installed, this area will get the arborist wood hip treatment to extend the existing path network. Perimeter will be planted with the wild strawberries from other parts of the yard. Based on how my other paths have evolved, the trout lilies will love this and come up in droves next spring. The native violets will slowly emerge along the edges. The Dutch white clover u planted as a grass alternative a decade ago will be smothered, along with the thyme speedwell, plantain and any tiny dandelions (any I saw I already forked out).

Carpet goes next, to protect the underside of the liner. More carpet will go on top wherever the liner may come in contact with rocks or other puncture risk. I’ll probably cover the whole thing bc raccoons and falling things. The carpet should function for decades, liner rated to last 20-25 yrs if installed according to manufacturer’s instructions. Carpet also shields the topside of liner from UV. Rocks will cover the carpet so won’t be visible.

Am now in carpet remnant gathering mode, as I’ve used up my current stash. Liner is due to arrive on Wednesday. Am super excited!

Super pleased with my containers of native plants that overwintered. Planted up three containers last spring to test proof of concept. One is shade / part shade, one is part sun/shade, the third is full sun / part sun. All had to tolerate dry conditions. And success! I got blooms through the season last year packing in at least 5 different species with staggered flowering windows; structural interest following the thriller - spiller - filler modality of container planting arrangement; and , best of all, the roots all made it through the winter. Only winter protection was placing the containers on the ground on the north east side of a big tree in the garden bed then piling fallen leaves around and on top. Come late April, I out the containers on their pedestals on the deck. Woot!

Pond progress: hole dug. Spots roughed out for outflow and in flow. Roots & rocks removed. Planting shelves formed. Surrounding area graded. Next up, lining with carpet for underlying the liner. This has been hard work, though probably nothing g compared to moving the dead weight that will be the liner; not to mention the rocks. Then there will be top dressing all my path with arborist wood chips… Love designing gardens, but doing the labor is getting hard on the body. Much needed hot epsom salt bath and g&t required for recovery.

Pretty sure bird seed isn’t OEM. Note that lift spring is now installed (had to disassemble then reassemble cabinet). Sloooow and steady progress on deep clean of machine. Using all the tricks (yay for heat gun on high setting). Haven’t burnt myself (yet). May have gouged my fingers a few times when the screw driver slipped. Pleased that the smoke detector hadn’t gone off in this latest round of stuck bolt removal. Still aiming at finishing this project before tge 1 yr anniversary of picking up this gorgeous 1903 No 27 Singer treadle sewing machine

Have been meaning to write about this for a while ... I've been uncomfortable with socials for a long time, this current platform for years, and now feel absolutely ill about it. There is no permutation of reality where I can feel ok engaging with this & enmeshed platforms, it’s antithetical to all I value. I’ll be deleting my accounts asap.

As an artist and small business person, social media is a huge part of building an audience and marketing. I havn’t figured out how I’m going to pivot so will keep my personal and business profiles here for the short term while I sort that out. I made an account (same name) where the sky is blue though i'm not convinced that will result in a significantly different outcome over time. Once I have a space I feel more ethically aligned with, I’ll post those links then delete all my accounts associated with the dark forces that make my inner core of my being wither and scream simultaneously.

What makes this hard is that these platforms have become a way for special interest groups and communities to interact easily. However, the ways in which the information we provide and the business practices of the so-called leadership are directly contributing to a crazy dangerous free-fall across political, social, cultural, economic, environmental, health, justice, civil society, humanitarian, etc spheres. It's unfathomable to me what I'm seeing. I will not be party to it any longer.

And yes, there is much more for me to do to confront all these issues. This is one step among many.

Any guesses what is wrong with this picture? On the positive side, your suggestion to use a weighted pill bottle as the tension brake worked well. Not sure how to untangle the mess of yarn that has spiralled onto itself. Had felt encouraged there briefly with my bobbin

Oh it’s been a trial. The project that keeps going and going. Oodles of fun figuring out how to reverse the action on the socket wrench ratchet. An unlikely workshop. Largely because I had set up the cast iron base where I plan to use it then saw a video saying that the ball bearings need to be greased so they don’t explode due to overuse. So. Many of the nuts were immobilized. Heat gun. Smoke alarm. Fumes. Open windows. Acetone. Rubbing alcohol. Busted part. Oops. Ultrasound nuts and bolts in acetone. Why is liquid white. Melted the basket. Was certain this worked a couple months ago? Maybe I ultrasounded in alcohol. Ug. After all that turns out there are no ball bearings. It’s a cone in a cone sized socket. Much Brasso, steel wool etc later, still not finished. Bits sitting overnight for the last rust removing treatment. Still need to figure out how to clean the sockets. Will inspect for rust further tomorrow. Have already swabbed with alcohol. May need a light sanding or filing. Hoping to get to grease everything up tomorrow and reassemble the base then attach the wood drawers. Tabletop remains in limbo as need to remove the veneer then reapply a new piece. Feeling tired.
