There was another cruise ship in town as we tried to enjoy the last weekend of summer. Next week is September – eek! I was wandering around the garden yesterday, examining the rapidly ripening tomatoes and picking some peaches (as one does!). The peaches are still a bit firm (well, hard, actually!) although they have a good colour and look ripe, so I brought some home in the hope they would ripen fully if I put them inside a paper bag on the kitchen counter. We’ll see if that works! Meanwhile, in an attempt to avoid the tourists, I went out to Dundas for the annual Plowing Match and Fair, where the heavy horse pull is always the centre of attention. Then to the beach, to have a swim and watch gannets. Weekend enjoyed – check!

It's that wonderful time of the year, when we hope that summer keeps going forever, but keep our eyes on the sky for signs of the next hurricane. Stay east, Ernesto! The garden is starting to share it's bounty - the leeks we left to overwinter have produced fine flower heads, from which we'll collect the seeds for next spring's planting; the garlic and the onions are safely in and left in warm airy spaces to cure before winter storage; and there's still time for Victoria and I to enjoy a beach day - and yes, I went for a swim!

Well, the 8th Annual Garden Party is in the books after a stunning afternoon - perfect weather, wonderful music, a crowd of around 100 guests, a Strawberry Social from the WI ... oh, and flowers ... lots of flowers!

For those of you who have read my blog [https://timgoddard.ca/], the fact that this invitation is a little later than usual will not be a surprise. Suffice it to say that things have been a little out-of-kilter around here recently.

That, however, is hopefully now all behind us, and we are delighted to invite those of you who are on (or near) to PEI to join us at the 8th Annual Garden Party this coming weekend, Sunday 28 July (1.00 to 5.00 pm). This year we have music by three talented sets of musicians (Gary, Marcus and Shannon; Jorge and Luis; Gordon and Todd) plus a Strawberry Social courtesy of the Uigg-Kinross-Grandview Women's Institute. And tents. And porto-potties!

This a special one, as it marks 50 years since a couple of important things happened.

First, Sally took 33 young people from the Lower North Shore of Labrador across Canada, by bus. From Vancouver the kids were flown home, and Sally flew out to Papua New Guinea to start a two-year contract with CUSO.

The same year, 1974, I graduated from Teachers' College and started teaching in England before taking a job in Papua New Guinea, where I met Sally. Our work has taken us around the world where we've had all sorts of grand adventures.

We're honoured that friends and colleagues from around the globe and from all five decades are coming to Grandview for the Garden Party, and we hope that you will join us.

No RSVP necessary. As they say on TV, "just come on down" (to Eastern PEI)! Given all the Malevolent Bots out there, I'm not giving out the civic address, but come down the Murray Harbour Road from Vernon River and, just over the hill after the welding place, we're first on the right!

As you can see from the attached, the garden is starting to look quite nice!

Christmas in April? Perhaps not, but the Hellebore is known as The Christmas Rose. Which might be true in the somewhat kinder climate of southern England, but here on PEI it is in bloom now! The frogs have been busy as well, and this year the buddleia did not all die back, so I've been experimenting with pruning to see what happens. For those in the area, the Garden will be open tomorrow (Sunday 28th) from 1-3 pm, for anyone who would like a wander around to see the early spring flowers. Drop by the blue house on the Murray Harbour Road, just over the hill from Grandview Welding.

This week in the garden we saw more spring bulbs start to strut their stuff,. The fall-planted garlic is showing a good germination rate and the first bud on the magnolia is just starting to open. Meanwhile, we're putting together some high raised-bed structures that will be used as a kitchen garden - I'm getting too old to be kneeling to w**d lettuce!

The harbingers of spring have been all around this weekend ... the first cruise ship of the season disgorged 2000+ passengers onto the streets of Charlottetown, which were all being dug up due to roadworks ... luckily the totality of the solar eclipse was only visible up west, so Victoria and I got out of town and watched it at Cap Egmont. Absolutely spectacular.

March roared in with a temperature of -13C and a windchill down to -24C. It's following tradition and leaving in much more lamb-like fashion. There's been heavy fog over the rivers and harbours, but the p***y willows are out and ice is off the pond. The descendants of my nine original goldfish are doing well and have obviously been enjoying a few months lolling around in the mud, doing what goldfish do. This the time to start planting various seeds so that they are strong enough for transplanting when the weather is warmer. There are lots of spring bulbs up now, and the first leaves of the tulips and daffodils have started to make an appearance. Spring can not be too far away!

For those of us in the Maritimes, now is the time to prune back any grape vines we might have planted. The great commercial estates of Bordeaux and Douro, and elsewhere, cut back to two stems, each with 2 or 3 buds. Their goal is intensity of taste and maximization of production. I spent yesterday taking my 30 vines back to two or three stems, each with three or four buds, my goal being to continue to build the main structural framework so that I have a good visual presentation. There are two tricks to vine pruning: one is to cut diagonally, under and in front of what you want to be the lead bud - one that is pointing in the direction where you want the new stem to grow. The second is to take time to admire the early spring crocuses.

Well, here we are. As a gardener, today is the best day of the year. We've just passed the solstice, and now the days will start getting longer, and soon it will be spring! A great day for making merry and thinking of the joys ahead.

It must be late fall - there was ice on the pond and the flowering grasses are in all their autumnal glory. One of our local plant shops had its annual end-of-season sale, where visions of spring meant that I over-indulged as usual, but I managed to plant all 700+ bulbs before the frost came and/or my hands seized up. Thanks Vessey's Seeds! Luckily there was still time to drop off copies of my new book at Bookmark in Charlottetown. 'Scammers' is also available at jtgoddard.com and from Amazon - hope you enjoy it!
