It is that time of year sadly. Saturday night’s cold took out the last of my flowers. My Citronella plants bloomed from June through to Thanksgiving this year! Now to start planning for next year!!

This lovely haul of grapes will make delicious grape jelly tomorrow. As far as I know Valiant grapes are the only ones that will grow up here in Dawson Creek. I bought them via mail order through a nursery in Manitoba 20 years ago and have been rewarded with 10-12 pints of jelly every year.

Haven’t posted for awhile - super busy getting ready for school and doing lots of herb drying!! Though some parts of the garden are winding down for the season - there is still lots of beauty to be found. With all this heat - the early mornings are a wonderful time to spend puttering in the garden. Here is a little bit of what I found this morning!!

4 cups of raspberries ready for jam! I just mix them all together which makes for a lovely deep purple/red color. The golden raspberries are the really sweet ones, with red being next and the black have the least amount of sweetness but are still wonderful to snack on straight from the cane.

What a wonderful morning roaming the woods looking for high bush cranberries. Found some but they are not quite ripe yet. But did find a few wild raspberries and strawberries. Listening to the birds was so wonderful. Found lots of beautiful flowers: asters, yarrow, hawkweed, bedstraw, goldenrod, vetch, fireweed, Indian paintbrush, red clover and the most interesting mushroom!! I don’t much about mushrooms but Google says it is called Leccinum. Picked lots
of red clover which will now get turned into clover honey!

It was foggy this morning! But I was still able to get some lovely pictures of the flowers blooming in my garden. The yarrow is beautiful but I think the pink ones are my favorite. I always let some of my oregano flower as the pollinators love it!! But I make sure the dead flowers are cut off before they go to seed - otherwise next year oregano is popping up everywhere!!

There is nothing more peaceful than wandering through the garden after an overnight rain and listening to the birds. Found a baby on the ground just outside the garden; the parents were close and he looked to be almost ready to fly on his own. Hopefully he will be ok. Stood and watched this little bee for a long time- amazing little fellow! I was happy to see that I will have a sizeable grape harvest this year and will be picking lots of Saskatoon berries and black raspberries in the coming days!!

The rain this weekend was definitely needed but the downpour on Saturday afternoon put 20ml of water in garden in 30 minutes according to my rain gauge. My plants took a real hit!! The blossoms were knock right off my fireweed!! The weather has improved and plants like the petunias have perked up. Did you know that when you deadhead petunias you should not just pull the dead flower off, but rather snip it off on the stem it will do wonders to encourage more blooms!! Happy snipping!!

Back in the garden - the weather is beautiful!! Here are a few of my basil plants - first cuttings are in the dehydrator. When you harvest your basil always cut from the top, don’t take more than a third of your plant, and prune it every 1 or 2 weeks during the growing season!!! Nothing smells better than fresh cut basil.
