Roots, Shoots & Blooms GardenCare

Roots, Shoots & Blooms GardenCare Hi! I'm Jacqueline. I love getting to the roots of things. What things, you might ask? I just love working outside and with my hands.
(1)

Perennials, annuals, vegetables, bushes, ornamental trees, fruit trees and dirt! From a young age and into adulthood, I was always working with flowers, perennials or vegetables. Whether it was helping a grandparent with yard work, or working on a vegetable farm or growing exotics on a balcony of an apartment building in a foreign country. Horticulture has been apart of my entire life. After retur

ning to Regina, I "put down my roots" in a home with land around it. The yard itself was small in size and struggling. The grass, the blue spruces were neglected. The yard itself had long runs of gravel and little imagination, and whole lot of zero scaping. Over the next 16 years, I single-handedly transformed a very hard yard to my own flourishing, flowering mini estate! I would consider myself a plant collector! You name it, I've probably have tried to grow it or plant it in some sort of way! I enjoy pushing (Canadian) zone 3 friendly perennials to their fullest thriving potentials. Even the annuals, I just loving being apart of the flowers becoming their best! It all starts with the dirt, roots and then to the shoots and finally their blooms! Over these years, I became the "go to gardener" in the neighborhood - friend when a problem or concern was happening that had to do with any horticulture. And now I want to share with more people!

Rethink your yard and start to grow your own crop. From vegetables to flowers anything is possible.

Using what had recovered from my own yard after June 9ths hail storm. To a client knowing another friend who needed a bit of help; that ended in a trade of labour of digging out an unwanted large patch of Irises. To yet another trade of product with a local Flower Farmer, who also gives you directions to a “secret” patch of flower heaven …. anything is possible!

With the help of a very small group of hard working volunteers and a drive to create something made from your heart and under budget…

Let tonight’s Starry Night be filled with laughter, fun, great food, sugar highs, fabulous surprises and memorable moments.

Happy Graduation! Conexus Arts Centre

If my boots could talk! 😂😊…. They for sure wouldn’t finish at this pretty Lilac and two Mock Oranges planted carefully into this gorgeous established yard. And yet they do! 😉It’s never just a hole being dug when you have had an old tree cut and stump grinded down to then replant with new plant material. There are always roots to consider. I’m very happy with the end result. And though the top foot of ground was dry, the clay soil was still very wet from the past few days of spotted showers. I will do a check up on this planting in a day or two, as we will be getting more rain in the forecast with high winds. Root, Shoots & Blooms GardenCare is always happy to go the distance to ensure the work is done well for the health of the plant Materials.

This raised bed presented a few challenges: it’s integrated into the south‑facing façade, bakes in intense sun, began as compacted contractor’s clay, and has intermittent water availability. Those issues have largely been addressed, and we’ve taken thoughtful, measured steps to set the space on a lasting course.

We planted a selection of sedums to provide varied mounding and gentle spread, and inset three low planters within the bed to introduce vertical interest. Each planter contains a bottom water reservoir and enriched, moisture‑retentive soil to support the plants through hot, dry periods. The result is immediate texture, seasonal color, and a harmonious balance with the front‑door plantings — a refined foundation that will mature beautifully over time.
Taking the initial step is hard to do but once done, you start to see the potential!🌼😊 Root, Shoots & Blooms GardenCare 🫶

Keep growing. 😉🌱

What a great day with Root, Shoots & Blooms GardenCare!

Lilac pruning is best done within two weeks after blooming. This hedge row needed a restart. And we had such a great day tackling this project.

To prune effectively, remove the oldest, thickest, and damaged stems, allowing room for younger stems to grow.

This hedge row needed a reduction in height by clipping tall canes down to roughly eye level, just above a node or set of leaves, some where just removed, as there was a lot of yearling growth below.

Need a project in your yard taken care of? Root, Shoots & Blooms GardenCare a call!

I knew it was only a matter of time. Still—watching the hail come down was hard. I’m grateful I hadn’t finished planting the planters, happy that my seedlings were protected and I’m quietly relieved that my perennials and native species are so resilient. The soil and plant material are healthy; they’ll come back because of this. I’m sad to lose that little greenhouse, but grateful for what remains. I can’t imagine not having the safety of my home as I watched the intensity of tonights storm. 🫶🌱

“Resilience is not about never breaking — it’s about learning how to bloom again from the same soil.”

Save the bees: it starts in the soil. 🌱🐝

Most bees nest in the ground — they need warm, well‑drained, low‑compaction patches of bare or sparsely vegetated soil to dig tunnels and raise young. Soil temperature, moisture, and disturbance (like tilling or heavy foot traffic) affect brood survival — while pesticides in soil can be deadly.
Ground‑nesting bees also help the soil: their burrows improve aeration and infiltration, and nest debris (pollen, nectar, brood residues) boosts local nutrients and microbes. Plus, healthy pollination changes plant communities, which feeds back into richer soil. 🌼🌿

How you can you help:
Avoid heavy tilling and compaction,
Cut the use of pesticide. Plant with diversity and native plants.
Small soil changes = big wins for pollinators. 💚

Here, I am weeding through a very large Perennial bed with a whole lot of invasive plants and yet, I want to address soil health.😉🌱

Weeds are a bio indicator that tell you about your soil. For example, Dandelions indicate you have compacted soil. And we’re all here to help pollinators by planting native plants and perennials, but if your soil is compacted your plantings aren’t going to flourish. They aren’t able to take-up the nutrients properly. Essentially the plant is then producing a low quality nectar, a junk food for our pollinators.

How can you improve your soil, stop using chemicals, stop adding big business dirt to your ground. Chemicals strip away the natural health in your soil causing plants to become dependent on those chemical instead of all the other natural nutrients.

You need to bring your soil back to life by using natural compost, worm castings, leaf mulch, green-grass clippings and organic matter into your Perennial Beds. Allow less disturbance throughout the growing season to allow nature to do its thing. Like the worms, they aerate the underground, mycelium to bring it back to life.

Stop looking at soil and plants as two separate things. They work together. Soil makes up 60% of biodiversity, 70% of native bees hibernate in our soil. If the soil is uninhabitable, our population of native bees and beneficial bugs will suffer. If you’re in it for the pollinators, first start looking at your soil. 🌼Give Root, Shoots & Blooms GardenCare a call if you are wanting to bring life into your yard. 🌼
