What started as a simple conversation in the neighbourhood led a Saskatchewan resident to test their home for radon. The results were higher than expected and led them to take action to protect their health and share what they learned with others.
“I first heard about radon testing from my neighbours, many of whom test regularly. When I tested my home, my radon level was 596 Bq/m³. I was somewhat surprised because my house felt fine, but at the same time, I wasn’t surprised, knowing some of the levels of other homes in my community.
I felt the radon levels in my home were too high to ignore or put off. At the time, I was able to afford to have the work done, so I decided to move forward. Since the system has been installed, my readings have been much lower. The highest has been around 69 Bq/m³, but they usually hover around 45 Bq/m³. These are winter readings, so the levels are even lower in the summer when the windows are open. I have a monitor that gives a weekly average. I’ve been a little surprised and pleased with these results, especially since part of my house has a dirt crawlspace that we haven’t been able to seal.
I connected with Lung Saskatchewan after the company that installed my mitigation system shared information about available subsidies. I wasn’t eligible for support from a different grant because the work had already been completed, but I did receive some support from Lung Saskatchewan.
I have been able to share my experience and knowledge of the process of testing and installing the system. Also, because many people in town have dirt crawlspaces that are difficult to seal, I've been able to report my good results, which people may find encouraging. If I could say one thing to other homeowners, it would be this: test for radon. It’s the right thing to do. Find out your levels, then worry about what comes next.”
