Hey all! We have some really lovely Dawn Redwoods for sale as 2 year old plugs or potted trees.
These are beautiful landscape trees with an interesting history (more below). They thrive in a variety of soils and handle very wet spots (but don't need wet feet,) These will grow into stately specimens if given the space but also can serve as a windbreak. Dawn Redwoods are a deciduous conifer, much like Tamarack. The needles turn a brilliant orange in the fall and looks stunning in the sun.
Metasequoia glyptostroboides was thought to be an extinct species, (by western science) only studied though fossil records. That was until the 1940s where in central China they were 'rediscovered'. Soon after, a handful of seeds were distributed to various arboretums and collections throughout the world. It has proven to be a wonderful tree with little pest or disease problems.
Now, many of the M. glyptostroboides that are sold here in North America are either cuttings (clones) or seed grown from the small amount that was initially brought over. My trees here are from China and will therefore have a much greater genetic diversity as a result. (Something that made me extra happy about this project)
