The Boreal Garden Project aims to empower communities to build, nurture and maintain large, sustainable gardens that will help to improve health, affordability and a sense of security around food. We aim to facilitate the restoration of traditional wisdom and knowledge around plant medicines and traditional food culture. We are responding to the urgent need for fresh and vegetables in Ontario’s re
mote, northern First Nation communities. We believe in the right to food self determination. We believe that reconciliation between North and South, Native and non-Native Canadians is about building respectful relationships and needs to include a synergistic approach to providing fresh and affordable food to all. Our pilot project was a successful collaboration with North Caribou Lake First Nation in 2016. The very first harvest yielded 75 heads of lettuce, 15 lbs of carrots, 80 bunches of green onions, beans, peas, kale and cabbage. Year two for The Boreal Garden Project is to make sure that every garden not only survives but thrives. Down the road: 49 Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) communities, 49 community gardens!
