It's been a great year, but challenging as it had many learning curves. Since starting I have always funded my jobs to completion, but this year I had several jobs cancel at the last minute. I had already paid for supplies which cannot be returned as paint is tinted. I schedule the job meaning no working for people that also need work completed and no income for my helpers. Then the customer doesn't want to pay for supplies they never used. In one month we had 6 last second cancelations costing me a lot of money and lost work. I never liked charging deposits, because I am all about the rest easy assurance that the job will be completed to satisfaction prior to paying, also the amount of jobs I have come across where deposits were paid but the workers never showed up. My company is based on trust and satisfaction which has won us back to back community votes top painter awards. Now unfortunately due to the amount of lost revenue and lost cash flow for products that are on route to the landfill unopened and unreturnable we have to make changes to our policies. A store with continuous theft can't keep it's doors open which is the cross roads we are facing unfortunately. All we want is happy customers, that is what we strive for. Charging deposits has always been something I never believed necessary as one at completion it feels like the incentive has been taken. For 2 it can cause anxiety for the home owner especially if they have had problems in the past.
