Healthy biodiverse ecosystems have natural checks and balances.

Removing pieces from the system (insects, native host plants, predators, etc.) makes everything fall apart. That's how we've become dependent on synthetic chemicals to handle problems that shouldn't exist in the first place.

5 ways we're maximizing a small growing space 👇

Our seed starting game had to go micro this year! 🌱

While our compact indoor station may not match the grandeur of past greenhouse setups on our farm in previous years, we're making it work.

But let's be real, there's never enough room when spring seedling fever hits, right?! 🌱

Starting tomatoes from seed is a non-negotiable for me, even with limited sunny spots. We'll make it happen! 👷‍♀️

This year, we're determined to really maximize our small space with these strategies:

☀️ keeping the sunny spots for plants that need the most sun (tomatoes for us)

🪜 more vertical growing

🥬 growing more shade-tolerant foods and native plants

🌿 more dense plantings

🌼 intercropping with edible flowers and herbs

👇What are you starting from seed right now? How are you maximizing your space? 🌱

Take part in a Community Grow-Out this year!

We want your help saving seeds and increasing how broadly they are shared across the country. We’ve chosen some Canadian-adapted beans and tomatoes from our Seed Library: your job will be to grow them, take observations, save LOTS of seed, and share it - with us and with others.

New to saving seeds? That’s okay, you’re welcome to take part! The bean project is particularly beginner-friendly. We will send you seeds and provide instructions throughout the season. Just make sure you have the time and garden space to follow through.

📅 The deadline for tomatoes is March 1 and for beans is March 15.

Save the date! 🗓 And come say hi next Sunday at the Victoria Seedy Sunday on February 25th! 👋

We're excited to be volunteering at the Seeds of Diversity Canada table, bringing along valuable seed saving resources and seeds to share 🌱

There's also still some time to drop off seeds for the seed swap table beforehand at the Victoria Compost Education Centre.

Looking forward to seeing you there and spreading the love for seeds!

👉 Drop a 🌱 in the comments if you'll be there!

"Embracing wetlands as a nature-based solution for flood management is not just an environmental choice but also a practical one. By preserving and restoring wetlands, we can enhance our resilience to extreme weather events, protecting communities and critical infrastructure like hospitals and hydro lines.

One other rather important role a wetland plays is its ability to store significant amounts of carbon, helping mitigate climate change."

World Wetlands Day is an opportune moment to reflect on the significance of these often-overlooked ecosystems.

Happy World Wetlands Day!

Wetlands regulate water, cycle nutrients, and support pollinators 🌿

💦Happy World Wetlands Day! Wetlands are land areas that are flooded or saturated with water either seasonally or permanently. Wetlands are critically important for storing and filtering water, sequestering carbon, and supporting remarkable levels of biodiversity. In the last 50 years, 35% of the world’s wetlands have disappeared.
Here at Swan Lake, you will find a marsh wetland that provides a home to hundreds of unique and at-risk plants and animals.
Do you want to help protect wetlands? Here are some tips on what you can do at home and in your community!
1. Volunteer in restoration efforts, such as tree and shrub planting and litter clean-ups
2. Reduce or eliminate the impacts of pesticides
3. Learn about healthy environmental practices at home
4. Reach out to others - inform and share.
5. Urge leaders to protect wetlands
6. Explore local wetlands with friends and family
7. Support wetland-conservation initiatives by donating time or money, if you can
Stick around for our stewardship programs such as Wetland Waterkeepers that will be returning in the Spring!
