Wisteria. I’m sure everyone has driven by wisteria and thought ‘Wow! Isn’t that beautiful!’ But have you smelled it? Wisteria is a plant that needs full sunlight and a lifetime support. It is a vine that gets heavier as it ages with trunks comparable to trees. Definitely a lifetime investment. But oh my…the scent is amazing.

Colours of Spring. While we have had our usual fluctuations of temperatures this Spring, the blossoms have really hung on. Every year I appreciate the efforts our communities take to provide us with the riot of colour exploding right now! What’s your favourite colour to see in the Spring? My kitchen window Service Berry is the highlight of my spring blooms.

Talk about instant privacy! While black wrought iron fences are decorative, they offer no privacy without planting. These large Hills yews were used to create an instant screen. Yews are a great evergreen to use. Especially Hills! Very dense, upright, no berries and drought tolerant once established. I love the dark green foliage! The yews in these photos measure over 4’ tall. Perfect for some private swimming!

Coral Bark Maple. When choosing a focal tree for your garden or landscape, I think it’s important to consider more than one season. The Coral Bark Maple does just that. When all the leaves fall and the weather turns cold, this maple turns the colour of the Red twig dogwood. Or better if possible? Planted in a high visibility area, say outside a kitchen window, you have something to look at all winter long. When the leaves emerge, they are chartreuse to green in colour. As weather turns, the Coral Bark Maple turns a gorgeous orange colour. What more could you ask for? This maple not only tolerates full sun, it thrives. With newer trends of black or grey fencing, this is the maple to consider.

Spring flowers on a cold and damp Spring day. We’ve had a ‘real’ spring with cool temperatures and ample rains. It allows me to appreciate the spring blooms that to me are the brightest of the year.
Hellebores and bright blue Scilla. In protected areas of the garden, the hellebore foliage looks great. You could easily see it as a true landscape plant. However in this case, both hellebores had very depressing, dried out foliage, that definitely detracts from the flowers beauty.
