🌿 When’s the Best Time to Aerate Your Lawn in Southern Ontario? 🌿

Thinking about aerating your lawn? Timing is everything! In Southern Ontario, the best time to aerate is early fall (late August to early October) when cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, and ryegrass are actively growing. This helps your lawn recover quickly and thrive before winter.

Spring aeration? It can be done, but wait until late spring (May) when the grass is in full growth mode—too early, and you risk damaging tender roots and inviting weeds.

For a healthy, vibrant lawn this spring, apply a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer when soil temperatures reach around 12°C (54°F). This ensures grass can efficiently absorb nutrients as it comes out of dormancy. Aim for an application rate of about 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. and water it in lightly to activate. Avoid over-fertilizing early, as it can encourage weak, fast growth prone to disease.

Bonus Tip: Consider adding a soil test before fertilizing to ensure your lawn gets exactly what it needs!
