Build a 2-Minute Toad House From a Broken Pot — It Eats 10,000 Slugs a Year

One broken terracotta pot. Chip a doorway in the rim. Set it upside down in a shady, moist garden corner. Congratulations — you just built the most effective slug control device in your garden.

American toads eat 10,000+ insects per season. Their top target? Slugs and snails — the exact pests that shred your hostas, lettuce, and strawberries every year.

Toads need three things: shade, moisture, and a hiding spot. A clay pot provides all three — the terracotta stays cool, holds humidity, and the chip entrance is exactly the right size to admit a toad but exclude predators like snakes.

Place it near your most slug-damaged bed. By June, you'll have a resident toad that works the night shift for free.

One broken pot. Ten thousand fewer slugs. Happy National Wildlife Day.

How to Maximize Growing Space in a Narrow Courtyard

Turning a neglected, compacted dirt lot into a thriving courtyard garden requires strategic vertical planning and permanent flooring. By utilizing the perimeter for planting and the center for movement, you can create a high-yield urban oasis that feels spacious rather than cluttered.

To begin, level the ground and install large-format stone pavers or outdoor tiles over a compacted sand base. This provides a clean, stable surface that eliminates mud and reflects light back onto your plants. Position deep wooden raised beds along the side walls to maximize the central walkway. Using "L-shaped" or rectangular beds keeps the middle open while providing enough soil volume for heavy feeders like tomatoes and peppers.

Utilize vertical space by installing a wooden arbor or trellis over the main path. This allows you to grow climbing roses or vining vegetables like beans and cucumbers upward, doubling your planting area without taking up floor space. For the walls, secure heavy-duty brackets to hang baskets for trailing herbs or flowers, which keeps them away from ground-level pests and adds a lush, layered look to the masonry.

In tight quarters with limited airflow, prioritize pruning the lower leaves of tomato plants to prevent blight and improve circulation. Use a "square foot gardening" approach within the beds—planting densely in grids rather than rows—to outcompete weeds and maximize every inch of soil. If your courtyard is surrounded by tall walls, choose lighter-colored stone and paint brickwork white to brighten the space and prevent the area from becoming a heat trap during summer months.
