Can we talk about Christmas Spoons?
‘Spoons’ is a term for energy/focus levels in the neurodivergent community. It can be an effective way of tuning into ourselves, or communicating our capacity to others.
In fact, as I write this I have two spoons in my drawer. I’ve unpacked from a two-week dogsit, set laundry on, and I’ll meet friends at a local coffee shop for our Winter ‘beach coffee’ dates that began during the pandemic.
That’s it. That’s my limit. Any more is bonus.
The pre and post-Christmas energy can be intense, especially as it is at the time of year that we naturally rest that so much is expected of us.
On a practical level, this particular task can be overwhelming so why not set a reminder to organize it in May?
In fact, set a reminder every other month to do some Christmas shopping too.
When we set these tasks to a gentler time of year we ease the pressure on our nervous-systems, and we might have the experience of having sweet Christmas memories in May. You can even make it fun by adding some mulled cider and Christmas music.
Check your ‘spoons’. This term is spreading into the mainstream, and that because it’s relatable. It helps us understand our own capacity, and have grace for the capacity of others.
