Nannyberry (Viburnum lentago) is a highly adaptable, multi-stemmed deciduous shrub or small tree native to eastern North America and southern Canada. It is widely prized by gardeners and landscapers for its multi-season visual appeal, exceptional hardiness, and immense benefits to local wildlife. It earned its unique common name due to lore stating that nanny goats are particularly fond of snacking on its sweet, ripe berries.

Key Characteristics & Identification
Size & Growth: Typically grows as a large shrub reaching heights of 10–18 feet with a spread of 6–12 feet. It can also be trained into a single-trunk small tree up to 30 feet tall.
Flowers: Produces large, showy, flat-topped clusters of creamy-white flowers in late spring (May to June).
Fruit: Clusters of small, ellipsoidal drupes emerge green, transition to pinkish-red, and mature to a deep blue-black in the fall.
Foliage: Oval, finely-toothed, glossy green leaves shift to a striking deep maroon, purple-red, or bright orange in autumn.
Winter Bud: Features a distinct, long, sharply-pointed terminal flower bud that resembles a crane's bill or a goose's beak.

Edibility & Foraging
The ripe, blue-black berries are entirely edible for humans and are traditionally nicknamed "wild raisins". Unlike juicy berries, they have a thick, pasty, and non-fleshy consistency similar to a date, prune, or fig. They can be eaten raw right off the bush after spitting out the single, large, flat central seed. Foragers often boil and mash the berries, pressing them through a food mill or sieve to separate the seeds from the dark, sweet paste. This resulting puree makes an excellent thick fruit butter or a banana-like baking substitute for breads, tarts, and pastries.

Planting & Environmental Care
Nannyberry is extremely tough and performs beautifully in home gardens, privacy hedges, windbreaks, and woodland restoration zones.

Sun & Soil: Thrives best in full sun to partial shade. It adapts easily to a wide array of soil types (including heavy clay) and handles both dry environments and occasional flooding exceptionally well.

Pruning & Spread: The plant spreads naturally by generating root suckers around its base. If you prefer a tidy, tree-like structure, you must routinely prune out these suckers. Pruning to shape the plant should be done immediately after the spring flowering period finishes, as the next year's flower buds develop during the summer.

Ecosystem Value: It is a critical ecosystem provider. The nectar feeds native bees, the leaves serve as a larval host for the Spring Azure butterfly, and the persistent winter berries offer a vital food source for songbirds and small

The Galaxy Magnolia (Magnolia × 'Galaxy') is an award-winning, deciduous ornamental tree prized for its large, fragrant, tulip-shaped flowers. It bursts into a striking display of reddish-purple to deep pink blossoms in mid-spring, just before its lush, dark-green leaves emerge.Key Tree FactsFlowers: Up to 20 cm across, with 12 petals featuring dark pink/purple exteriors and lighter rose interiors. Because they bloom slightly later than other magnolias, they are less susceptible to late spring frosts.Size & Shape: Features a strong central leader and a narrow, pyramidal-to-oval canopy. It matures to 30'-40' tall and 20'-25' wide.Growth Zones: Hardy in Zones 5 to 8. In colder climates (like the Prairies), it should be planted in sheltered, south- or east-facing locations to protect it from strong winds and cold air.Care & MaintenanceLight Requirements: Thrives in full sun to partial shade.Soil: Prefers rich, fertile, well-drained, and slightly acidic soil.Watering: Requires consistent moisture, especially in its first few months and during long, dry periods. Apply mulch to retain root moisture and protect the tree from cold.Pruning: Minimal pruning is required; only trim dead or damaged branches, ideally right after it finishes flowering.
