Neeraj Bhatia is a licensed architect and urban designer whose work resides at the intersection of politics, housing, infrastructure, and urbanism. He is a Full Professor at the California College of the Arts where he also directs the urbanism research lab, The Urban Works Agency. Bhatia has also held teaching positions at Columbia GSAPP, Harvard GSD, UC Berkeley, Cornell University, and Rice University.

Neeraj is principal of THE OPEN WORKSHOP, a transcalar design-research office examining the negotiation between architecture and its territorial environment. Select distinctions include the Emerging Voices Award (2024), Canadian Professional Prix de Rome (2019), the Architectural League Young Architects Prize (2016), and the Emerging Leaders Award from Design Intelligence (2016). THE OPEN WORKSHOP’s design-research has been commissioned by the Seoul Biennale, Venice Biennale, Chicago Architecture Biennial, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, among other venues.

Javid Jah is an artist and architect exploring the sacred dimension of geometry. Operating as a design-build studio with maker Alex Akbari, he designs temporary and permanent sculptures that marry traditional knowledge with contemporary approaches to fabrication. His public art practice is interested in making permanent, large-scale experiences that express a sense of Unity and infinity simultaneously. The principle of the practice is intersectionality - finding a balance between light and form that speaks to the correspondence between human and cosmos.

A tiny two-storey gallery in Kensington Market with oversized imagination. We worked closely with the Whippersnapper executive team from day one—shaping the concept that helped secure grant funding, then rolling up our sleeves to design and build it (some in-house, some with trusted trades).

The move was simple, white flexible gallery space above, colorful back of house in the basement (storage, bathroom and work space). The curtain allows them to hide away anything that needs to be hidden during public opening events.

The move was simple, white flexible gallery space above, colorful back of house in the basement (storage, bathroom and work space). We gave the facade a facelift as well with black tiles, black paint and a large storefront window.

Small space. Big magic. ✨
