Some of the "secrets" to happy plants and a green thumb for me is trial and error and research.

Comment below with some of your go-to plant resources and tag them if they're on instagram, for us to share the knowledge!

Some of my favourites for learning about plants and gardening have been on Youtube, especially these channels:

And locally has been my favourite place to recommend to any people who grow outdoors. Their resources and infographics are the BEST!

I'm new to the instagram but so far there are so many awesome plant resources and amazing people!

🎡 Bringing home my baby pitcher plant 🎡

It's a small delight bringing home plants on public transit and seeing peoples' positive reactions. 😊

I think this carnivorous plant was extra happy it was soaking wet outside! The easiest way to rehydrate this one while on my way home!

The small selection of carnivorous plants at the hardware store Canadian Tire looked so sad and dry compared to when I'd visited the section a couple months ago. I considered rescuing more but resisted buying more than one... for now!

There were a couple types of North American in stock this time but sadly the hardware store doesn't label each variety. They're babies so it's hard to tell, but I'm thinking they're a type of Sarracenia, but if someone can this one as a variety or other , I'd kindly appreciate any help! πŸ’š

I'm still new to the wonderful world of carnivorous plants! ^.^

My Superstar Crotons (Codiaeum variegatum) growing strong! πŸ’š

Our home got a 4 inch nursery plant ~1 and a half years ago. With my bright humid bathroom and tendancy to overwater, this plant baby has turned into a luscious plant parent of their own! With two plant cuttings so far! The baby the size of the original.

Often mistaken for Aucuba Japonica, aka spotted laurel, the has smoother, less serated leaf edges and tends to grow more upright than their bushier, hedge laurel lookalikes. The gold dust plant / spotted laurel is also more commonly grown as an outdoor landscaping plant than the croton.

: With most plants*, when bringing them home from the store, inspect the bottom of the nursery pot for signs of visible roots. If the pot is easy to remove, take it off and check the bottom of the plant like in this photo.

If you see lots of roots right at the bottom/they're starting to circle around, it's a good idea to repot the plant in a pot a couple inches bigger than the nursery pot.
Don't be afraid to massage out the roots especially if they seem dry before !

Also remember to check the roots of your every couple of seasons. I've definitely killed a couple of plants before by forgetting to repot them before they were too squished in their pots! πŸ˜₯

*Some plants do fine and can thrive when somewhat root bound. This includes plants like: Peace lily, spider plant, African violets, aloe vera, umbrella tree, ficus, agapanthus, asparagus fern, spider lily, Christmas cactus, jade plant, snake plant and Boson fern.

This plant nook is so cozy!

As we get near winter in the northern hemisphere, I hope you're giving yourself some extra down time.

Just as your plants can go dormant with less sunlight in the darker months, remind yourself that it's important to relax, find time to slow down and take breaks for self-care.
