Last week, I thought it would be nice to bring the chairs out for some photos. I scouted a few spots around Vancouver, mostly places I enjoy spending time in.

Some of them were harder to reach—for example, this spot near Lighthouse Park took a bit more effort to get to, but it was worth the trip just to watch the beautiful waves.

I’ll be sharing more photos here over time.

Just returned from Japan and still feeling a bit jet-lagged. During the flight back, I went through the photos I took—it was truly a fulfilling trip.

The main reason for this visit was to participate in Miyazaki Chair’s new design exhibition. SINN, one of the featured chairs, was part of the showcase, and I was honored to give a speech introducing its design.

What I love most about the Miyazaki Chair community is its tight-knit, connected nature. From retailers and craftsmen to owners, event planners, and designers, everyone shares a long-standing bond and a sense of collaboration. It’s an atmosphere I deeply appreciate.

This trip was a wonderful chance to reconnect with old friends and build new relationships. I had the opportunity to meet many local and international retailers, and hearing their feedback was incredibly valuable. These conversations have given me new insights to refine my next designs—improving where needed while preserving what works best.

Traveling with my family this time made it even more special. It was meaningful to share with them the work I’ve been dedicated to over the past few years. Family trips always bring a unique sense of joy and connection.

A big thank you to , ,and for organizing such a fantastic event. From the intricate gift bandanas featuring chair sections to the woodpile backdrop in the event space, every detail was thoughtfully planned. The preview opening for the new designs, the laughter during the auction, and the delicious dinner—all of it created unforgettable memories for me. And , you did such a wonderful job for the egg omelet.

Thank you again, and I’m already looking forward to the next one.

After Salone in Milan, I’ve been quietly working on a project very close to my heart—opening my own showroom and gallery space. As a designer, it often feels like much of my work is a dialogue with myself, and I don’t always get the opportunity for feedback beyond a few close friends and family. I’ve long envisioned having an open studio where visitors can come in, experience my work firsthand, and engage in meaningful conversation. A space that showcases the thought and process behind my designs.

Although the current space doesn’t yet have the capacity to match my original vision (it’s by appointment only for now), I see this as a strong beginning. With furniture design, photos can sometimes be deceiving—you truly need to touch, sit, and feel the materials to fully appreciate the work.

If you’re interested in my work and happen to be around Vancouver, I’d love for you to stop by for a cup of tea. I’d be happy to share with you the accumulation of my efforts over the past few years.

Cheers,

Alan

SINN in Japanese means heart. It’s everyone’s involvement and their heart that created this chair. I am truly grateful for this creation.

Image 1: After numerous adjustments, the prototype was finally completed. I made a presentation in front of all the employees of Miyazaki Chair to introduce SINN. It was an emotional moment for me because I felt as a designer I am really connected with the craftsmen and we all aim to make the best for the design. P.S. The reason why the prototype looks half dark is that after the prototype was adjusted on-site, it’s easier to recognize the changes after it’s painted dark.

Image 2: Masahiro-san’s smile comparing the original backrest to the updated backrest on the first prototype.

Image 3: , the man behind helping to deliver the design of SINN.

Image 4-6: I don’t know their names but truly appreciate their hard work.

SINN’s profile transitions from round to sharp, soft to the touch in the front where your hands rest on the armrest. When viewed from the side or back, the profile becomes sharper, defining the chair’s form, as chairs are typically seen from these angles. The round and soft aspects provide comfort, while the sharpness defines SINN’s identity.

SINN ( 心 )
By Miyazaki Chair

The original inspiration for SINN is a bicycle frame. I was inspired by the changing metal tube profile that emphasizes modern bike geometry. In Taiwanese, SINN means body / frame /身. The original naming started from this.

In Japanese, SINN means heart 心. I have been invited several times to the Miyazaki Chair factory to work on the development of the chair. I truly felt that everyone involved in developing this chair poured their whole heart into trying to perfect this design. SINN in Japanese is the perfect way to describe this design and everyone’s effort involved.

My initial encounter with Miyazaki Chair’s work was at in Vancouver, where I had the opportunity to see san’s DC 09 and DC 10. I was simply mesmerized by the beauty and the advanced woodworking craftsmanship exhibited by both the designer and the manufacturer. In that moment, I said to myself, “How wonderful would it be if one day I could design and collaborate with them?” That single thought made a huge change for me, transitioning from being an architect to becoming an independent furniture designer.

Now, I am more than proud to announce that my first collaboration with will be unveiled at Salone Del Mobile in Milan this April. After nearly five years of dedication and passion, I am eager to showcase the culmination of our work. I cannot wait to meet you there and personally explain the journey behind the work.
