It’s rare we get to experience our built spaces over a long period of time. At the Forest Cabin, we see the function of architecture evolve and adapt as the users grow and develop.

Conceived as a pause moment outside of each bedroom door, this bench acts as an extension of the private bedroom into the corridor. Over the years, it has always been the landing spot for stuff. It has often been used by parents to stay close as little ones fall asleep. But as they grow, their independence and separation expands. The cubbies now become a place to separate from the crowd. It has become the quiet place to read alone or hang out and play.

The collaboration between design teams and builder/installers is critical in executing a cohesive, high level product. The Endswell Project on Bowen Island ties architecture design with interior design to landscape design. Design expression and material selections carry consistently throughout the interior architecture, exterior spaces and landscaped moments. The large project ties a new primary residence, new gym amenity building, new carport, and renovated guest houses into a common master plan.

With the amazing design team of , , with , and builder/installers , , , and many others, each brought their expertise and contributions to bring the beautiful project to life. We are excited to show the finished product this year.

Autumn. When the days get shorter, the chill is in the air, and nature begins to rest. A few autumn captures through the lens of our architecture over the years.

The spatial long view supports cognitive wayfinding: cues to where you are going, knowing where you are within a journey, and a understanding of where you came from. As we get to the end of the year, we look ahead and reflect back in time to ground ourselves in the present.

Before their building project, the Bridge Church had a strong sense of community, connection, and communion within their congregation. They sought a physical home to embody the social concept of “church,” providing a place to reach a wider community and offer shelter.

Over 25 years ago, I completed my thesis titled Interface: Social to Spatial. It was a study of multiplicity and flexibility at varying scales, aiming to free the need for identifying space and to encourage diverse social activities—play, live, learn, socialize, care. It examined the relationship between program and identity, and challenged their definitions.

The Bridge Church project brought me full circle back to my early architectural studies. The church serves a specific need for the congregation but also provides a valuable community amenity to Deep Cove, North Vancouver.

A new project under construction! The new primary residence sits on a 140 acre property that houses a historic, working farm. To contextualize the house project, the idea of “utility of building structures for specific use” drove the planning and massing of the new house. It has four distinct zones organized by use - primary suite, guests, gather & support. With each zone, the spaces and roof line lies low following the natural ground plane to minimize excavation and extraneous foundations. Each interior zone optimizes its relationship to its adjacent natural landscape for a blend of indoor and outdoor living. The zones relate to its natural orientation relative to seasonal solar paths, prevailing winds, native landscape and views.

The sun is shining but the air is cool. Autumn rolls near!

In the efforts to keep cost down, many of the Forest Cabin’s furnishings were sourced second hand. The wooden chairs used at the dining table were once church chairs. The large wall map once hung in a local elementary school. The authentic, aged pieces help give the interiors warm and interest.

The long view in a newly completed home for a young family in Vancouver. The typical lot in Vancouver constraints the buildable envelope to set front and rear yards. The design of windows to capture the long views can help to extend the eye and living experience beyond physical walls and site setbacks giving a reference to daily and seasonal patterns of the sun and nature.
