Art, culture, and storytelling are deeply woven into Journey Home.

Created in collaboration with Coast Salish artist Chris Paul, the proposed cultural and healing space features a series of expressive panels inspired by W̱SÁNEĆ teachings, identity, and connection to land and community.

Rather than applied decoration, the artwork is integral to the architecture itself, informing the rhythm, scale, and presence of the space. Warm natural materials and carved forms work together to create an environment grounded in cultural meaning and care.

Journey Home reflects the power of collaboration between artists, communities, and designers to create spaces that feel welcoming, respectful, and deeply connected to place.

Journey Home is a proposed cultural and healing space for the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Palliative Care Unit, created in close collaboration with Indigenous Health Providers at Saanich Pensinsula Hospital, Indigenous Liason Nurses, W̱SÁNEĆ health directors, Elders, and Coast Salish artist Chris Paul.

Designed as a contemporary expression of traditional Coast Salish architecture, the pavilion and gathering space aims to support Indigenous ceremonies, reflection, and connection within a healthcare setting. Rooted in the land through the use of natural materials and a deep respect for cultural traditions, the project seeks to create an environment where healing and ceremony can coexist with dignity and care.

More than a building, Journey Home represents an ongoing commitment to cultural understanding, collaboration, and creating spaces that honour the W̱SÁNEĆ way of life for future generations.

Soft blooms, layered history, and a new chapter for the street.🌸

This project brings new homes and renewed energy to the neighbourhood, with a large-scale floral mural wrapping the building’s upper façade and transforming the corner into a living canvas. Created in collaboration with local artist Lydia Beauregard of , the mural brings warmth, softness, and a sense of place to the streetscape, while echoing the cherry blossoms that return to bloom along the street year after year.

We look forward to seeing it come to life!

The Alma is a six-storey residential development that brings 43 rental homes to a compact infill site in downtown Victoria. Drawing from the area’s historic architectural character, the design incorporates a symmetrical façade, articulated brickwork, and a ground-floor commercial space. A large-scale floral mural spans the west elevation.

The contemporary interpretation of traditional elements helps unify the surrounding streetscape – bridging the contrast between an adjacent heritage building and a future large-scale modern development.

Located in a walkable, amenity-rich neighbourhood, the project supports urban living with a generous rooftop terrace, a shared courtyard, dog wash facilities, and secure bicycle parking. Under construction now, this building is set to be move-in ready by early 2027.

At Cook & Pendergast, the project’s solar-control screens were designed with renowned Coast Salish artist Chris Paul, bringing a narrative and craft to the building’s façade. Curved forms respond to the mature Chestnut trees along Cook Street, while warm materials and active ground-level uses help anchor the project within the everyday life of the neighbourhood.

A four-storey mixed-use building in Cook Street Village, designed to support comfortable, everyday urban living. This thoughtful neighbourhood addition strengthens the street edge while creating livable homes that feel rooted in Fairfield.

The project contributes to a more vibrant, walkable community—demonstrating how infill development can thoughtfully shape and enrich the urban fabric.

Through the community engagement process, Cascadia Architects was introduced to Chris Paul, Coast Salish Tsartlip artist and long-standing collaborator with the firm.

Set in the hip Quadra Street Village neighbourhood in Victoria, this duplex— completed in 2017 —brings International Passive House performance to a vibrant urban corner, while quietly contributing to the city’s Missing Middle. Bright, playful façade elements animate the street, contrasting a calm, muted material palette.

Built using familiar construction methods, the project shows how high-performance housing can be practical, inviting, and more accessible.

A small-scale plan with a bigger goal: more homes, more choice, and more ways for families to stay rooted in the city they love.

Meet Malav, Cascadia's new Intern Architect who brings a focus on building tectonics and context-driven design to the firm. Before moving to the West Coast, Malav earned his Master’s from the University of Toronto and his Bachelor’s from CEPT University in India, having been active in the architectural scene since 2016.

His experience in the field includes work at a few small to mid-sized firms, where he contributed to a variety of projects ranging from heavy timber renovations and laneway houses to cultural spaces. These roles have given him a unique perspective on the assembly of the built environment, particularly through the use of sustainable and readily available materials. He also has an interest in exploring repeatable housing systems, prefab construction, and the logic of stick-built assembly.

On the weekends, you can find Malav exploring the landscapes of Vancouver Island with friends. He rarely leaves home without a camera and sketchbook in hand, and he also enjoys scouting local food and breweries. Welcome, Malav!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Design Victoria x Cascadia Happy Hour this past Saturday!

A memorable evening of connection and conversation, set within a space where history and contemporary design come together. It was a pleasure to gather in such a character-rich setting and celebrate the depth and diversity of Victoria’s creative community.

From familiar faces to new connections, the energy in the room was a reflection of the collaborative spirit that continues to shape our local design culture. We’re grateful to have shared the evening with you.

Thank you to our partner's who helped bring this event to life: The Salient Group, Truffles Catering, CDM2 Lightworks
