Congratulations to Monrovia on your 100th Anniversary. It was an honor to attend your celebration last night and see so many past and present friends at Monrovia and industry friends. So many titans of our wonderful industry were there. Amazing food (the Marionberry ice cream was my fav!), music, reminiscing, laughter, and fun. All under a perfect Oregon sky. What a perfect way to celebrate such an incredible company that is Monrovia!

Stop #5 combines Days Two and Three of the 2003 IGCA tour through Switzerland.

One of the design details I really liked was the covered aisles. They provided protection from the weather without making the garden center feel enclosed, and the strong repeating framework helped lead customers through the departments.

The level of display throughout the tour was top notch. Looking at these photographs today, I would never guess they were taken 23 years ago. The presentation still feels clean, organized, and surprisingly current.

The alphorn photograph also has its own unexpected story. When I posted it in 2003, the Swiss tourism board contacted me and asked if they could use it in one of their brochures. Not bad for a photograph taken during a garden center tour.

Then the tour ended with a black-tie banquet. I cannot remember any garden center tours in the United States that wrapped up quite that way.

Stop #4 takes the Fun Bus across the Atlantic, although this particular leg required an airplane.

On August 20, 2003, we began Day One of the International Garden Centre Association tour in Switzerland. Sharing this stop today has special meaning because my partner Erik’s family is from Switzerland. It feels like a wonderful way to honor his heritage while revisiting a country that left me with so many lasting impressions.

One of the most interesting things I noticed was that every garden center we visited was fully stocked with fruit trees, many of them already loaded with fruit. They told me September was their biggest month for selling them.

It made perfect sense. Fall is when customers are thinking about apples, harvests, and gathering food from the garden. As more garden centers create harvest festivals and expand their fall experiences, I still believe there could be a tremendous market here for fruit trees bearing real fruit at the moment customers are most inspired to plant them.

I have tried to persuade growers to take the leap and grow a fall crop for our industry. So far, I have not found anyone willing to do it. Perhaps one day.

Some say, "It's too early to display Fall!" When I hear this, I think, "You're thinking like a homeowner; not as a Retailer". As Retailers, we must always be ahead of the curve in conveying who we are and what we offer. Our Customers may not be ready to buy today, but they better think of us as the source when they are ready. And when we display Fall (even in Mid July), they buy. And they will buy enough to make those gains that much larger and easier to obtain. I never had a flat or down Fall when I started displaying early. But the later I start, the more I know others have beaten me to it.
The product mix will change from pre-season on. Early, I like to concentrate on everyday decorative items that share Fall colors. There's very little risk in doing this. I already have the product on hand. All I need to add is a few definite "Fall" things to pull it together, like silk fall leaves, some leftover pumpkin pots from last year, some plants that have fall colors like Crotons, or appeal to kids like Venus Flytraps. Then as true Fall merchandise arrives, I blend it in or move onto even larger displays.
But the one thing I never do? I never hold that Fall merchandise back for "later". "Later" is now. -Erik

Stop #3: Logan’s Garden Shop, Raleigh, NC
Timeline 2008

Logan’s made remarkable use of Raleigh’s historic Seaboard Railroad Station, creating a garden center unlike any other. That chapter recently came to a close, but Logan’s has returned to its roots with an exciting new location at the State Farmers Market. It is already on my list of places I want to visit.

DeWayne's Home & Garden Showplace
Selma, North Carolina | 2008

It's hard to believe this visit was back in 2008. So much has changed since then, but one thing has remained the same: DeWayne's commitment to creating an unforgettable customer experience.

Their gift shop has evolved into something truly extraordinary. Today, it's on a level unlike anything else I've seen in the garden center industry, with stunning displays, incredible product selection, and an experience that draws visitors from far beyond North Carolina.

It's been fun watching DeWayne's continue to raise the bar over the years.

Have you visited DeWayne's? What's your favorite part of the experience? 🌿
