In Mongolia, this Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)-implemented project promotes community-based natural resource management across the Khangai mountain landscape and empowers stakeholders to restore degraded lands.

The rehabilitating and conserving the mountain landscapes in Khangai region of Mongolia for improved ecosystem services and community livelihoods project improves land management policy and planning at both a national and local level and co-develops nature-based solutions for land rehabilitation. It also establishes community-based models for sustainable natural resource management.

Altogether, the project is expected to restore 24,000 hectares of degraded land, improve management of 630,000 hectares, and directly benefit 10,000 people.

From 28 September to 2 October 2026, the 28th Session of the FAO Committee on Forestry (COFO 28) and the 10th World Forest Week (WFW 2026) will bring together governments, forestry leaders, experts, partner organizations and youth at the FAO Headquarters in Rome, and online.

COFO provides an important platform for identifying emerging policies and technical priorities, sharing solutions and guiding future action on forests.

The discussions at COFO 28 are highly relevant to the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), particularly efforts to conserve, restore and sustainably manage forest ecosystems while advancing broader sustainable development goals. Strengthening synergies between forest and biodiversity agendas will be essential to achieving global commitments for nature, climate and people.

As countries accelerate the implementation of the , and 2026 offer an important opportunity to exchange knowledge, showcase innovation and advance integrated solutions for forests and biodiversity.

The 2026 Call for Proposals under the Kunming Biodiversity Fund (KBF) is now open.

The fund supports projects that advance biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, policy integration, resource mobilization, and equitable benefit-sharing in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Project budgets can reach up to US$500,000 for single-country projects and US$800,000 for multi-country initiatives. Stage 1 applications are due 15 September 2026.
