SIDE
CMCA+UPSTRUCTURE won an invited competition to design a three-block urban community for UDI.
The SIDE in Smichov is part of a continuum of Prague's urban morphology, however, redefining former BROWNFIELD zones as new extensions of the city on the Left Bank of the Vltava River. We were inspired by the power of Smichov's industrial history and its shining moments, which are ever-present, and still seed our creative thinking as architects. The approach to the SIDE was about simple, timeless elegance contrasted with spirited character and color, bringing IDENTITY to a new living quarter for over 2,500 people here near the river in Prague's chic Smichov District.
We invented here at the SIDE a city within the City, with a special skyline and roof landscape, which gives it strong visual character. Our intention was to frame views with connection and meaning in the immediate context of the SIDE, and our motto is just to '...live by the River', and to be anchored in a place where poetic history inspired architectural quality and a tactile urban space.
