Dear friends,

This is an invitation to tomorrow's panel discussion on Design for Inclusivity at Aarhus School of Architecture.

Panel 5: Design for Inclusivity is part of the International Union of Architects (UIA) World Congress to be held in Copenhagen during the Summer of 2023. Check more info at the UIA Copenhagen 2023 World Congress website.

The slogan of the congress "Leave No One Behind" aligns with a lot of work I know we are all doing on redefining who those "no ones" are, and ensuring that our definitions include more than just the normative stance- to include the diversity of gender, ability, neurodiversity, age, race, ethnicity and socio-economy. No one should be left behind, but we need to explore who we really mean when we say that.

Join our pre-event hybrid symposium happening this coming Thursday.

An Architecture of Social Justice – Protagonists Statements.

Architecture is still a white-male-western dominated field, and we are here to change that!

Follow our Equality Collaborative and stay tuned for our upcoming panel series!

Responsible architecture is also about equality!

Hi everyone,

The Equality Collaborative is an independent, open, activist group of volunteer students and staff at the Aarhus School of Architecture. We work to broaden the discourse around equality in our school and community. We celebrate the unique opportunities of a diverse and inclusive society, no matter someone’s gender, sexuality, race, religion, or culture.
We recognise that there are still challenges with regard to gender inclusivity and other forms of discrimination within the architectural profession. We also recognise that gender is only one of the many intersecting ways in which people are excluded from being seen in and contributing to the profession and to society as a whole.

What is our role as architects in this?
How can we built a coalition of solidarity around issues of gender, equality, including non-binary and transgender people, as well as talking about sexuality, race, age, ability or economic discrimination within our profession? We hope that we can build up the kind of community we want to see in the world – a community of equal opportunity that welcomes and celebrates diversity, that cultivates solidarity with other peoples. Undoubtedly, architecture, urban planning, landscape plays an important role in such an endeavour. We don’t have all the answers, but we welcome you all to join the conversation.

As part of the growing need to make the architectural field more inclusive to everyone, me and some colleagues have been part of a unofficial initiative at Aarhus School of Architecture, the 'Equality collaborative'. This is also Responsible Architecture!

The architectural field is filled with racism, sexism, homophobia and other types of discrimination and inequalities. We are fighting to make our school a more inclusive place and implement zero tolerance for discriminatory behavior.

The school didn't have any statement or plan to deal with such situations, but after our talks with the management, some policies started to take place:
https://aarch.dk/en/zero-tolerance-policy-towards-abusive-behaviour/ -id-3

It's a small but important step in a long journey towards equality. We are also planning a series of panels in Equality in Architecture for the upcoming semester, where we will talk about gender, racial and equality issues related to architecture.

If you ever experience sexist/discriminatory behavior in the architectural field, please write to this initiative, we need to know your stories so we can spread awareness:

Keep up the good fight!

One of the basic conditions for a good study environment and a good work environment is the existence of a culture characterised by respectful behaviour and a good tone of communication. At Aarhus School of Architecture, there is a clear expectation that all students and staff members should avoid a...

Johanne Mose Entwistle is an anthropologist at AART architects. For her, anthropologists and architects are a match made in heaven. In this podcast, she unfolds how her values inform her practice and methods when working with architecture. She explains her holistic approach to design and the importance of architects and anthropologists working together to create the best impact on society. She focuses the discussion on two central projects. A children’s hospice in Rønde, Denmark (https://aart.dk/en/projects/borne-og-ungehospice), and a student house in Copenhagen (https://aart.dk/en/impact/the-aart-of-competing-loneliness).

RESPONSIBLE ARCHITECTURE IS ALSO ABOUT EQUALITY IN OUR PROFESSION!! The Aarhus School of architecture created the gender equality comity, please SHARE WITH US YOUR EXPERIENCE ABOUT SEXISM IN ARCHITECTURAL FIELD IN DENMARK!!

(English below)

ENGLISH
To everyone who works or studies in the architectural field in Denmark.

Dear all,

The architectural field does not differ from other fields in that many have experienced and still experience transgressive, degrading, sexist behaviour.

We want to bring attention to the extent and the problems with sexist behavior in the architectural field - both in education, at the workplace and within organizations and associations in the industry.

We hope that you will help us by specifying whether you have experienced or witnessed sexist behavior in the architectural field in Denmark.

You can contribute in the following ways:
Signing that you have experienced or witnessed sexist behaviour by sending us an email with your full name.
You will not have to add your study or workplace.

and/or
Share concrete, anonymous examples by sending us an email with your experience(s).
You can see examples of others' experiences below in this letter.
Send your signature and/or examples to: [email protected]

After about one week, Sunday November 8th, (OBS! New date: November 15th), we will gather the preliminary signatures and examples and share them with relevante media.
We will only make the signatures public if we have received a minimum of 200 signatures, to avoid individualism of the signatures and/or contextualization of the problems addressed.

In this context sexism is defined as experiences of sexual, discriminatory and/or gender harassment character.
It is equally important to emphasize that it concerns all genders.

There has been silence about sexist behavior in the architectural industry far too long. Behavior that unfortunately in many cases has been normalized and accepted.
Now is the time to demand change, unfold the scope and contribute to the ongoing public discussion about sexism, in order to be able to progress.

Our intention and goal is to challenge the educational institutions, organizations, associations, and decision makers in the industry with the aim of demanding a joint action plan to stop sexist behavior within the architectural field.

Please forward this email to as many as possible in your network who you think will find it relevant.

Thank you for your voice and your courage!

With best wishes from the initiative group:
Ida Bergström, architect
Christine Bjerke, architect
Emma Elfvik, architect
Heidi Jacobsgaard Schøbel, architect
Kristine Jacobsen, architect
Thea Christine Høeg, architect

Examples from the architectural field:

One among us…
..has experienced that a boss directly said that it was not possible to trust female employees, since they after a certain age, only think of having children.
..has at a christmas party experienced getting a hand between the legs by her boss, who earlier that evening, had entertained the others in detail with the sexual things he would do to her.
..has experienced that a teacher held her tight and kissed her on the neck at the christmas party at the architecture school. The incident caused her to go home crying and since then she had to use her energy on avoiding him and being afraid of meeting him.
..has experienced that a sexism case at the workplace got silenced with the words that the employees should not be so gender-intimidated.
..has experienced that the union rejected to move forward with a sexism case in court, as it “would not benefit financially”, even though she would most likely win the case.
..has experienced that a boss told the client that he had brought the employee to the meeting so they had “something nice to look at.“
..has been told by a teacher at the architecture school that the Danish architectural tradition is lost, since there are too many women in the architectural industry and that women are bad architects.

This Friday we finished the first phase of the participatory design project between Institut for (X), Godsbanen, Aarhus, and Arkitektskolen Aarhus. In an intense 2 week workshop, 130 students from Teaching Program 3 (sustainable architecture) explored the theme of Responsible Architecture, participatory design, and methods of anthropology and environmental psychology applied to design. We explored the process of user inclusion, social justice, and democratic inclusion in the process of designing our cities! These intense 2 weeks are over but our future collaboration is just starting. Stay tuned!
