NILS STÆRK

NILS STÆRK NILS STÆRK is a contemporary art gallery with an international profile, established in 1997 The gallery was established in 1997.

NILS STÆRK is a contemporary art gallery with an international profile based in Copenhagen. Today, the gallery represents both upcoming, mid-career, and established national and international artists working across various media and genres, united by a conceptual narrative exploring current societal values and conflicts in today’s globalized society. Since its inception, NILS STÆRK has fostered gl

obal collaborations, particularly within the Central and Latin-American art scene, as well as with global art institutions, biennales, and galleries, creating new projects and opportunities with its represented artists and placing their work in significant art collections. The gallery has since its inception participated in several international art fairs such as Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, Arco, Art Brussels, FIAC and ZsonaMaco. Initially located in a small gallery in the warehouse district at Islands Brygge, followed by a large space at Carlsberg Copenhagen, the gallery relocated to a 500 m2 former car workshop in the Northwest part of Copenhagen in the spring of 2017. This location still bears the mark of a raw, industrial aesthetic, a stark contrast to the gallery’s minimalistic interior designed by Henning Larsen Architects. In 2024, the gallery expanded with a second space in Copenhagen's city center, responding to increased interest in exhibitions featuring its artists. Situated on a bustling high street, this space intertwines its shows with the vibrant city through large, street-facing windows.

ON VIEW

"Untitled" (2024) by Gert and Uwe Tobias is currently on display in our gallery's meeting room at Glentevej 49, Copenhagen.

The artistic universe of the duo has a direct connection to different art historical and cultural epochs, reflecting an anti-nostalgic use of images from current popular culture. Inspired by surrealism and abstract modernism, art history is an essential key to opening and grasping Gert and Uwe Tobiasʼ distinctive imagery.

This matrix of isms breaks down the conventional distinction between art and craft and provides a renewed opportunity for the imagery of the works to re-emerge on its own terms-as an allegory of the fluctuating character that defines the contemporary art experience.

CLOSING SOON

You can experience Ikram Abdulkadir’s solo exhibition "We Will Meet Again in Paradise" at the gallery on Holbergsgade 19, Copenhagen, until Saturday, June 6.

The title "We Will Meet Again in Paradise" carries both spiritual and emotional resonance. In Islamic belief, paradise is imagined as a place of reunion. Within Abdulkadir’s photographs, this idea appears less as a distant promise than as something momentarily realized in the act of gathering itself – through closeness, care, and the quiet recognition that emerges between those who stand side by side.

ON VIEW

"Hand" (2023) by FOS is on display in our gallery's office space at Glentevej 49, Copenhagen.

FOS is continuously interested in exploring scales in his sculptures. Here, the focal point is the hand – an emblematic symbol that serves as a link between ourselves and the world around us. The artist highlights the pervasive influence of our hands in everything we do, inviting the viewer to reflect upon the complex relationship between individuality and sociality.

As part of the exhibition "Fuglsang x Lea Porsager" at Fuglsang Kunstmuseum, artist Lea Porsager presents a new exhibition in dialogue with the museum's collection.

Using her monumental sculpture "G.O.D. [GENERATOR.ORGANIZER.DESTROYER] GENERATOR" (2020) as a point of departure, Porsager brings together all of the museum's sculptures within a single space, centred around the 19-meter-long windmill blade that forms the exhibition's central work.

Ikram Abdulkadir’s work "Walaasheey in the Sun_1" (2025) is currently on view as part of her solo exhibition "We Will Meet Again in Paradise" at our gallery at Holbergsgade 19, Copenhagen.

Working within a documentary photographic tradition, Abdulkadir photographs the women closest to her – sisters, friends, and members of her community – approaching the camera as both participant and observer. The images arise from everyday environments, both urban and domestic, yet carry a heightened sense of presence and attention.

ON VIEW

Matthew Ronay’s "Lineage" (2022) is currently on view in our gallery office on Glentevej 49, Copenhagen.

Both formally and conceptually, Ronay’s artistic universe draws on the spirituality and design traditions of certain non-Western cultures, as well as the cosmology of science fiction. His interest in ritual is reflected in works that often take on talisman-like qualities.

Like mythological visions, Matthew Ronay’s sculptures embrace the mystical and strange while maintaining a deeply human resonance.
