The word shagara means tree in Arabic and it is trees that Shagara aims to grow more of, particularly inside cities, in order to protect the environment and at the same time mitigate poverty. While the environmental benefits of trees are obvious, one might question how trees can improve someone economically? One solution lies in providing poorer individuals with fruit yielding trees and plants. Th

رجعنا النهارده نزور واحد من أقرب المشاريع لقلبنا — وشوفوا النتيجة! 📸
في ٢٠٢٠، حوّلت "شجرة" سطح مدرسة تواصل في عزبة خير الله إلى سطح أخضر مكثف بيشتغل جنبًا إلى جنب مع ألواح شمسية— وبعد ٦ سنوات، السطح لسه حيّ وبيكبر!
وللي ما يعرفوش، تواصل مدرسة ومبادرة مجتمعية بتقدّم تعليم مجاني وتدريب مهني وبرامج فنية للأطفال المتسرّبين من التعليم في القاهرة — وبتدعم أمهات ونساء المجتمع من خلال الحرف اليدوية.

Celebrating 6 Years of Green Roof Classrooms in Egypt

On Monday, February 9th, Shagara proudly marked the 6th anniversary of its very first Green Roof Classroom in Qanater. The celebration was honored by the presence of H.E. Engineer Ayman Attia, Governor of Qalyubia, and H.E. Dag Juhlin-Dannfelt, Ambassador of Sweden to Cairo.

Launched in December 2019 with the support of the Swedish Business Community—most notably IKEA, which contributed furniture and carpentry—the project aims to alleviate overcrowding in Egyptian public school classrooms, while also promoting urban biodiversity and contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation

Since its inauguration, the Green Roof Classroom has served an accumulated 920 students to date, offering them a healthier, greener, and more inspiring environment to learn and grow.

For six years, this initiative has shown how education and sustainability can work hand in hand—transforming challenges into opportunities for future generations.
