Brief History Of the olive tree in Spain...

During the Roman domination, the Hispanic Peninsula
had already a considerable amount of olive trees
producing fruit. From the 2nd century Rome imported oil
from Spain as it enjoyed a high reputation among
Romans.
Production in Spain was significantly increased during
the eight centuries of Hispano-Arabic civilization,
especially in the Guadalquivir.
The Arabs introduced their varieties in southern Spain
and influenced the spread of the culture to the point of
influencing the Spanish language.
Castilian Vocables, "aceituna" (olive), "aceite" (oil) or
"acebuche" (wild olive), have Arabic roots; the Spanish
word "aceite" comes from the Arabic "al-zait" which
means "olive juice"; "Aceituna" comes from the
Hispanic-Arabic "azzaytúna" derived from Classical
Arabic "zayt?nah" itself derived from the Aramaic
"Zaytuna" or the diminutive "Zayta".
With the discovery of the Americas in 1492, Spain
brought the olive tree in America; in 1560, the olive tree
was imported to Peru. It was from Seville that went the
first olive trees to the West Indies and then to the
mainland.
It was introduced mainly throughout the 16th and 17th
centuries in Peru,Chile, Argentina and Mexico.
Today, we find olive trees up to California and various
parts of South America.
