Earlier this year we installed this two light contemporary panel in a newly renovated Donside fishing lodge. The owner wanted an artwork to reflect his love of the local hills, celtic mythology and the ongoing landscape and river restoration the estate was carrying out.

The panel sits in a custom lightbox (by local firm Brudon Joinery Ltd) inserted into a restored wood panelled rod cupboard originally made by the uncle of the architect in charge of the project, Duncan Robson (DWR Architects).

This week we have been working at Fountainhall Church at the Stocket (formerly Midstocket Church and, prior to that, St Ninian’s). This well-used church has recently undergone renovation and construction of a large new general-purpose space, and as part of the renovations, glazing repairs were required.

We made new 2 new leaded panels for the tower, and carried out timber repairs to the frames which, as the photos show, were badly rotted in some places. The frames were repointed using sand mastic, and painted with linseed paint.

We used internal scaffold to remove, reload and reinstate two hoppers which had been badly damaged during Storm Arwen. The frames of these were in reasonable condition, although the pulley holds on the main frames were both missing, so the church asked us to putty the hoppers closed to prevent them being damaged in the future.

New Blog Post alert:

St Clements Church in Fittie, Aberdeen was relocated to Mastrick around 60 years ago. The modern building contains three stained glass windows salvaged from the old church - a large, three-light crucifixion window by Clayton & Bell and two smaller panels.

Granite is pretty tough stuff, so the majority of the stained glass windows we work on around Aberdeen are set in timber frames. Elsewhere though, church window apertures are usually formed from cut blocks of sandstone, and the stained glass set directly into rebates or channels cut directly into the stone.

This week's install in the lovely St Andrew's Kirk, Haugh of Glass, required a bit of impromptu masonry work at the springline - the point on an arched window where the vertical sides start to curve (or "spring") in).

Some slight historic settling at the top of the arch on this window meant we had to open up the channel to accommodate the stained glass arch. Once that was done, the remade window slotted into the channel just fine.

A simple in-situ repair at Mannofield Church this morning, made slightly trickier by the polycarbonate secondary glazing to the outside. Some reclaimed glass providing a near perfect match with the original. Second image shows the damaged section.

Spring's wet weather carried on into the first day of summer, and May Day in Aberdeen was a wet one. Luckily I had an inside job to get on with, and I fitted these two little door lights in a new door made for a listed property undergoing extensive renovation. The brief was effectively "traditional, but not too traditional, and thistles".
