PLANNING AND LISTED BUILDING APPLICATION
Submitted for Rear Extension in Trowbridge, Wiltshire.

We’re pleased to have recently submitted a Planning & Listed Building Consent application for a small rear extension to a historic house in Trowbridge. This project reflects our ongoing enthusiasm for compact, carefully considered interventions that make a large and meaningful difference to how people live and experience their homes.

The proposal replaces an existing poor-quality lean-to with a modestly enlarged, purpose-built extension, creating a new dining space that flows naturally from the central kitchen. Central to the design is the idea of a 'garden within a room' - all about strengthening the relationship between house and garden, and drawing the joys of the courtyard garden into everyday life.

The early concept explored ideas of a planted elevation as part of the extension’s connection to its garden setting, as though reclaimed by planting and nature.

As with many of our projects, we’ve sought a thoughtful dialogue between new and old - carefully weaving new fabric into the old. The material approach responds to the building’s heritage, having evolved towards a green glazed tile exterior cladding with subtle references drawn to Trowbridge’s rich industrial past and cloth-making history. These details aim to embed a strong sense of local identity while giving the extension a distinctive, jewel-like presence within its courtyard garden setting.

Ultimately, the project is about enhancing the way the home works, how spaces flow and improving daily living by deepening the connection to the garden as an integral part of the home.

PLANNING APPROVAL

We are delighted to have received planning approval for a contemporary extension within the Linton Conservation Area in Kent.

The extension features chevron timber cladding, referencing the steep pitches of the existing stone house. The larch cladding will be treated with light grey SiOO:X to complement the Kentish ragstone.

The technical drawing package is underway and we’re excited to get this on site in the coming months.

Welcome to Our New Home at Newark Works, Bath

We’re delighted to announce that we’ve officially relocated our Bath studio to Newark Works, a beautifully restored riverside workspace in the heart of Bath Quays. Our new home occupies the former Stothert & Pitt crane works, part of a Grade II listed Victorian industrial complex that once formed the heart of Bath’s engineering legacy. For over a century, Stothert & Pitt was one of the world’s leading crane manufacturers, supplying iconic machinery - including cranes used in the construction of the Great Western Railway and even aboard the Titanic - before the works closed in 1989.

Following a thoughtful and extensive restoration, Newark Works has been transformed into an inspiring creative hub that celebrates its industrial past while supporting modern ways of working. We’re thrilled to now be part of this vibrant setting and creative community.

We look forward to welcoming clients, partners, and friends to visit us soon!

Forming Metalwork Canopies to Charred Timber Cabin

We were recently back on site for one of our projects just outside Bath, to install a set of bespoke perforated steel canopies - the final detail in our Charred Cabin project, which already features a rich and finely crafted interior we both designed and installed.

These canopies, designed specifically for this project by our Director, Lee Holcombe, feature a custom perforated pattern inspired by the delicate form of allium flowers - a nod to the surrounding garden landscape and a personal touch for our client. The mild steel has already begun to weather naturally, creating an evolving patchwork of rust tones that will gradually settle into a deep, even red oxide, as a living finish that adds character and texture to the exterior.

There are three canopies in total, each carefully fabricated and assembled on-site, and their presence brings a final sense of cohesion and refinement to the overall design. While functional in providing shelter, they also act as sculptural elements - filtering light through their floral cut-outs and casting subtle patterns onto the charred timber cladding beneath.

By night, the canopies will be lit from within revealing their delicate and suprising lantern like qualities.

We look forward to sharing images of all three canopies in place soon, as we complete this special project that so beautifully balances craft, material honesty, and site-specific design.

Creating Better Places to Work:

Expanding upon our previous post, we wanted to provide a more detailed look into how we are approaching our new office retrofit and build project in West Oxfordshire.

Sustainable Design: Retrofitting for the Future:

Rather than demolishing and rebuilding, this project takes a fabric-first approach, creatively repurposing the existing structure to minimise embodied carbon while maximising energy efficiency. By retaining much of the original building’s concrete and blockwork, we significantly reduce material waste and environmental impact. Carefully designed timber-frame extensions introduce warmth and additional space, locking in even more embodied carbon in the most responsible way possible.

From structure to systems, every element of this project has been designed to reduce environmental impact while enhancing comfort:

Solar PV panels integrated with car charging stations.
Air source heat pumps for low-carbon heating and even cooling.
Triple-glazed composite timber windows for high thermal performance and airtightness.
MVHR ventilation system for continuous fresh air and heat recovery.
Stone mineral wool insulation for superior energy efficiency and avoiding the use of more toxic alternatives.

But sustainability isn’t just about energy - it’s about fostering a healthier, more pleasant daily experience.

Bringing Nature into the Workplace:

The design doesn’t just focus on the building - it extends to the surrounding landscape. While the site has an industrial past, we’re proving that you can create a green oasis anywhere. The office environment will be softened with greenery, inviting outdoor spaces, and carefully planned landscaping that strengthens the connection between people and nature.

A Collaborative & Human-Centered Approach:

This project is powered by an ambitious and hands-on client, one who brings the passion and soul of a home renovation into the commercial space. Their involvement has enriched the design process, ensuring that every space feels personal, welcoming, and human-centred. We believe modern offices should feel comfortable, intuitive, and inspiring - after all, they’re places where we spend much of our time.

By blending smart spatial planning, thoughtful material choices, and a deep understanding of how people interact with their environment, we’re creating an office that feels more like a home - a place where ideas thrive, collaboration flourishes, and well-being is prioritised.

Redefining the Office: A Healthier, More Inspiring Workplace in Oxfordshire.

At Studio Four Point Ten, we believe the office should be more than just a place to work, it should be a space that inspires, supports well-being, and fosters creativity. That’s why we’re thrilled to be leading the retrofit and extension of a new office space for an award-winning digital marketing and design agency in Oxfordshire. This ambitious project reimagines what a workplace can be, balancing sustainability, comfort, and efficiency to create an environment that enhances both productivity and quality of life.

Nestled near the historic market town of Woodstock, just outside the Blenheim Palace estate, this new office setting offers a rare combination of accessibility and natural beauty. The site, a brownfield plot with a long history of commercial use, is now entering an exciting new chapter - one that prioritises sustainability, efficiency, and a deeper connection to the landscape.

Work is now underway on our sustainable office retrofit near Woodstock, Oxfordshire. We're transforming a former builder’s merchant-turned-children’s nursery into a new workspace for a multi-award-winning UK digital agency.

The initial strip-out phase is always an exciting moment -revealing the raw essence of a building, stripping it back to its core, and exposing the hidden beauty within. While construction can often seem like a chaotic process of destruction, it is a necessary step in the journey of renewal, a blank canvas ready for new layers of possibility.

Here’s a glimpse of the beauty we find in the midst of the dust and debris - proof that even in transformation, there is something to admire.

We have been working with the fantastic Co-forest Initiative at their Founders Wood site near Bristol, to develop plans for a new timber shelter and bridge to help support their team of volunteers and connect between their new and emerging woodland sites. We were delighted to take on the project as an opportunity to showcase our sensitive approach to detail and craftsmanship led design, and have been looking forward to picking up the tools to help with its construction.

Works are now well under way so we'll be sharing construction updates very soon!

We’re pleased to share that our project near Bradford-on-Avon has recently secured planning permission. While modest in scale, this scheme reflects how even smaller interventions can bring about meaningful transformation - both in the way a property is experienced and in how it functions for its owners.

Set in Winsley, the project reimagines the front approach and landscape of an existing home. Our client was looking to introduce a greater sense of welcome and material richness to the property’s entrance, and the resulting design focuses on just that: a series of cascading stone steps, a finely detailed timber entrance canopy to define and announce the front door, and a revived garden and landscape plan that restores a sense of the traditional ‘front garden’ - something currently lacking on site.

Projects like this remind us that big change doesn’t always require large scale. The key lies in well-judged moves, careful refinements, and introducing the right ingredients - materials, detail, and spatial character - tailored to the particular challenges and opportunities of a place. We really enjoy working on these more compact, detail-driven pieces, where considered design can make a genuine difference.
