PLANNING AND LISTED BUILDING APPLICATION
Submitted for Rear Extension in Trowbridge, Wiltshire.
We’re pleased to have recently submitted a Planning & Listed Building Consent application for a small rear extension to a historic house in Trowbridge. This project reflects our ongoing enthusiasm for compact, carefully considered interventions that make a large and meaningful difference to how people live and experience their homes.
The proposal replaces an existing poor-quality lean-to with a modestly enlarged, purpose-built extension, creating a new dining space that flows naturally from the central kitchen. Central to the design is the idea of a 'garden within a room' - all about strengthening the relationship between house and garden, and drawing the joys of the courtyard garden into everyday life.
The early concept explored ideas of a planted elevation as part of the extension’s connection to its garden setting, as though reclaimed by planting and nature.
As with many of our projects, we’ve sought a thoughtful dialogue between new and old - carefully weaving new fabric into the old. The material approach responds to the building’s heritage, having evolved towards a green glazed tile exterior cladding with subtle references drawn to Trowbridge’s rich industrial past and cloth-making history. These details aim to embed a strong sense of local identity while giving the extension a distinctive, jewel-like presence within its courtyard garden setting.
Ultimately, the project is about enhancing the way the home works, how spaces flow and improving daily living by deepening the connection to the garden as an integral part of the home.
