Foraging on Your Plot!

The Spinney at Bulkington Road Allotments has such a wide variety of plants, and so many of them are overlooked as weeds.

Alliaria petiolata 'Garlic Mustard' is one of my favourite, biennial Spring plants that can be found in the wild.

🌱 The leaves are best foraged before flowering, as the older foliage can be bitter.
🌸The flowers and buds work great as a garnish.
🌱The seeds can be used as a mustard substitute later into the summer.
🌸 Second year roots can even be used, and apparently taste mildly of horseradish... Although I can't say I've tried them!

These plants are usually easily identified - but please be careful. If you crush a leaf and it doesn't smell like garlic, you have the wrong plant! 🫣

A big shed dismantle and clear out left some rubbish next to our toilet block, and this weekend's working party was spent clearing the rubbish, weeding, and laying down some fresh new woodchip.
