Let's talk about "Edimentals", this is a phrase that is in vogue with many avid gardeners at the moment, it is a portmanteau of Edible and Ornamental.

This is a category of planting which provides beautiful colour and structure to a garden environment, whilst also providing fresh vegetables and fruits. Pictured below is one of my ornamental chilli plants last year.

I can offer advice to my customers on edimental planting, and if you are interested in hiring me for your garden I can offer discounts on Edimentals whilst I still have a good supply. This Italian Arum is showing its foliage beautifully at the moment. This stunner of a plant does well in shady spots and borders that are tight on space, you will need to keep on top of it as it can be a spreader but with regular weeding it can be kept in pleasant little clumps. This one in a customers garden was looking much better following the application of some high quality mulch.

Plant diseases cost the British economy millions of pounds per year, across agricultural and horticultural sectors. These diseases proliferate through many factors, from climate to cultivation. Hamamelis x intermedia - Hybrid Witch Hazel.

You will see these spectacular plants flowering this time of year and they're a very welcome winter spectacle. So make sure you take the time to stop and sniff these flowers.

If you're lucky enough to have an established witch hazel in your garden you should consider a health check and prune. This snowfall accentuates the dead flower heads of the Hydrangea in your garden, the proud winter structure is an often overlooked part of the Hydrangea.
As valuable as the summer bloom and winter structure are, they are due a prune in the near future, once the hardest frosts have passed it will be time to regenerate these impressive garden staples.

Through my time at private and botanic gardens in the last few years I have gained skills and techniques to give your Hydrangea the love it deserves.

Merry Christmas!

Incoming tree fact: 🌲
The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree pictured below is a Norway Spruce (Picea abies), and ever since 1947 the city of Oslo has gifted a tree of this species to the city of London every Christmas. This same species is also gifted to Edinburgh and Washington D.C. as gratitude for the aid given to Norway during the second world war.

So when you look over at the Christmas tree in the corner of your room, just think of the potential cultural, environmental and natural history behind whichever species you use.

Pruning a Japanese maple is a marathon not a sprint. This is the second year of working on this particular tree.

When undertaking this type of work, it is important to consider how the cuts you make will impact its future. Pictured below (image 2) is the dead growth which is removed each year in order to prevent proliferation of disease within the plant. I will also remove any overlapping or diseased growth in order to keep the tree in its healthiest condition.

I have had thorough training and experience in pruning these stunning trees during my time at multiple historic and botanic gardens, so if you want your prized Acer to get the TLC it deserves, feel free to message me! 🙂

December is the perfect time to freshen up tree circles!

This Betula utilis is located on a damp shady lawn, at this wet and dark time of year you can make the garden pop by re-establishing the edges and adding some mulch to tree circles and beds.
