Make/ Shift/ Space A portable artist structure which hosts a programme of live art-making through residencies, workshops and events within temporary public locations.

Make/Shift/Space is a portable artist structure which hosts a programme of temporary live art-making through residencies, workshops and events within public locations. Devised by artists Claire Hickey + Emily Warner, the project is supported by Arts Council England and mac Birmingham. The roving platform connects the mechanics of everyday space with the process of artistic production, giving visib

ility to the work that artists do. The first phase of the project explores social practice across outdoor sites in Digbeth, Sparkbrook and Balsall Heath (Birmingham). Commissioned artists Claire Hickey, Laura Burns, Sarah Taylor Silverwood and Emily Warner will carry out a series of public realm residencies and community engagement opportunities between May-June 2016. REQUEST - As we plan for the future we are looking into new options for partnering with other organisations. Part of this regards storage of our structure. Currently housed up two flights of stairs (and no lift) we require a ground level / lift accessible space that we can access relatively easily once we begin our activity again. As we are no longer a funded project, hard cash is in short supply however if you or anyone you know has a spare corner somewhere in Birmingham, we would be happy to discuss fair usage in return for housing our little friend. See the attached flyer for full details and please share.

Great to see STS sign-makers continues to evolve - new commission by Sarah Taylor Silverwood for the New Art West Midlands identity// re-launch this evening / New Art West Midlands Re-launch

Our New Art West Midlands identity has been conceived by artist Sarah Taylor Silverwood and developed in collaboration with graphic designer Keith Dodds.

The starting point for the new identity was a commission undertaken by the artist during her sign making residency with Make/Shift/Space, a portable artist structure devised by artist-duo Hickey+Warner.

This week Make/Shift/Space is at at Millennium Point with Juneau Project, Trevor Pitt and Punch Records. Today the Arts and Craft Camp were introduced to ideas about interrupting and interacting with public space through slogans and protest signs; the group will then go on to create other DIY-based works throughout the week and use the structure to display final projects at a public showcase on Saturday 10th September.

A day for other artists and arts practitioners to play with the Make/Shift/Space structure and explore how their practice can develop in the public realm. Using traces from the residencies, found materials, enquiry questions and conversation, the artists created temporary interventions and performances based on one word that summed up their practice: ACTION, RENEWAL, & MARK.
