Not a fan of burning pampas grass for the obvious environmental & safety reasons. Just as effective is to use a hedge trimmer and a springbok rake to then comb out further dead growth from the centre. March is the ideal month to do this. As with all grasses, the active growth comes from the base pushing the cut foliage up and out. Leaf edge blades are serrated and scratch the skin easily so wear gloves, long sleeves & trousers. After clearing cut foliage, sprinkle a slow release fertiliser around the base and gently work into the soil for the growing season ahead.

Another trailing plant for hanging baskets and containers. This is Indian mint - Satureja douglasii. I’ve been wanting to start my own plant stock of this for a while. Have used it to good effect back the in parks & garden days where it would cascade over bridge railings down to the lake. Can drop down to 2 metres with sufficient root growth and nutrients. Not a true mint but has a lovely minty smell and is edible. Culinary use is generally as a tea infusion. Not terribly hardy though alas - just down to -5 so best to overwinter in frost free places. Very easy to root cuttings in water. I bought these 6 rooted plant plugs from South Eastern Horticultural and have already got some further cuttings in water producing roots after 8 days. Useful trailing plant for sun & part shade.

Sowing hardy annuals under glass this week. Often recommended to sow direct to open soil where they are to grow. However, many of these will end up in clients’ gardens so necessary to germinate in cellular trays and pots for transportation.

Some of these pansy & viola plug plant roots are very dry. Best to soak dry roots well before planting in the soil or in pots & containers. Especially when exposed to these cold & drying winds of late.

Reviving old hanging baskets on a budget. These baskets have a cut plastic compost bag as an interior liner that’s been punctured for drainage. However the coir outer liners have degraded over the seasons. A cheap aesthetic solution has been to use thatch which I’ve hand raked from a very mossy lawn.
Disadvantages are that grass could regrow plus birds can peck at moss for nesting material. So regular upkeep is required and keep some spare mossy material to patch in as needed. Moss will fade with weather exposure but a well planted summer basket will eventually cover with flower & foliage.

This winter flowering viburnum has wonderfully fragrant flowers. This mature example has borne its flowers too high to really enjoy but the shrub is also useful as screening. Need to hard prune about a third to thin out after flowering with a few hard pruning cuts to promote new lower growth that will eventually bear flower at a sniffable height 👃😊.

Made this Blue Tit nest box from pallet wood. Not the best wood for longevity but a decent roof should help it last for several seasons. And good to reuse and recycle ♻️ 👍

Propagating Creeping Jenny - Lysimachia nummularia aurea. Will use for cascading foliage in summer hanging baskets. Easy to root in just water during growing season or in this case, stock plant divided up earlier in year with a bit of root on each segment.
