Well, it’s school holidays, so I had my apprentice with me again today, my son Gabriel.
He felt a little left out as he doesn’t have any branded workwear, so he fashioned himself a badge and got his phone, diary and toolbox together and off we went to our first job for some lovely clients with a door lock issue.
He was quite happy helping out until we came across a little issue that took some fathoming out. At this point it all got a bit too much for Gabriel and holding a torch wasn’t his idea of ‘fun’. So he binned me off, found a toy box and eventually settled down in front of the TV with snacks and a drink courtesy of our lovely client on this particular job.
All in all I think it’s fair to say that unless Gabriel is actually doing the job and working out what the issues are and what needs to be done to get the repair completed, he gets fed up rather quickly. A bit like me in all honesty. I don’t like to watch,I want to be involved and definitely don’t like taking orders!😬😊
For me, well it was just lovely to have my little boy with me helping out, something that is quite a privilege for a dad to be able to do. Although I did have to bite my lip on one or more occasions, particularly when he shone the torch in my eyes and blinded me for a second!😂

UPVC is a very durable product. I have been working on a property today with upvc windows that must be 35+ years old. In fairly good order really, just in need of a bit of TLC on most of the doors and windows, which I was happy to provide.

However, one of the windows had a major, but common problem. Bent and worn out hinges. 🤔
Due to the age of the windows, the original hinges were of a type that are now quite hard to get and a lot dearer to buy than the much more common, modern hinge.
Here at GBM, it’s my job to overcome these issues as cost effectively and as quickly and conveniently as possible for my client. So in this case I modified the main frame of the window, to be able to accept a more modern, bigger hinge. This got the job completed today, so no second visit, which can be inconvenient for a client and it still worked out a better price for my client, than me sourcing some of the original style hinges as they are quite a lot dearer, if indeed you can get them.
Overall, I’m happy, as my client is happy and I have been able to keep these old, but still very useable windows working, hopefully for years to come. Which is better for the environment, and better for my clients pocket. 😊

So far this week it’s been all about door adjustments. As we go from season to season, the weather can sometimes play a part in your doors and windows not opening, closing or locking properly. This is generally down to the expansion or contraction of the frames, largely due to the hotter or colder weather at the time.
If you’re having issues, don’t leave it too long before you get it looked at, as continued use of a door or window, particularly when it’s hard to lock, can cause premature wear on the main multipoint locking system, and you don’t want that from a cost and more importantly inconvenience level.

I have my little boy Gabriel with me today. He has been asking for a while if he could spend the day, coming to work with me, so for the last day of his school holidays, that is exactly what he is doing.
He hasn’t told me he his bored yet, but it’s early days!😊.
Incidentally, I often get asked what the ‘GBM’ in GBM Lock And Window Solutions stands for, and when my wife and I were thinking of a name for the company, we wanted something that was personal and close to our hearts, so we chose GBM as they are our sons initials.
Hopefully one day, if he so chooses, he can take the company over, knowing it’s his initials above the door!😊

Door issues!!

Are you having issues opening, closing and locking your exterior doors, particularly in this hot weather?
My most common job at the moment is to carry out door alignments.
In the hot weather particularly, doors (and windows) ‘swell’ and become difficult to open and close. They can also become quite difficult to lock and left unresolved this can lead to further damage to the multipoint locking system and sometimes at considerable cost. Worst case scenario when you leave the house and lock the door, the main mechanisms cries enough and fails, leading you to not be able to get back in when you return home.
To resolve this, before the mechanism fails, a door realignment and lubrication service of the locking system is generally required.

Hello everyone.

I hope you have all managed to keep warm and in particular safe, in the icy and snowy weather we have encountered this week?

I have been out and about where possible since returning after New Year, but have had to re schedule some work due to the road conditions unfortunately.
Hopefully, all should be back to normal next week!🤞

This time of the year seems to really highlight any draughts in your property, where the cold air can get in and your expensive, heated warm air can escape. Of the jobs I have been able to get to this week, most of them have been window hinge replacements ,due to large gaps in the sash due to worn hinges, leading to draughts!

Hello everyone.
Well, it’s nearly that time of the year, when the big man, with the white beard, wearing a big red coat, decides to visit us!
With that in mind, I will be finishing for Christmas at the end of next week (Friday 20th), to spend some quality time with my loved ones, as I hope all of you lovely people are also fortunate enough to do too?
