Spent our Sunday doing this one… there are probably easier ways to spend a weekend, but where’s the fun in that? 😅
The client had just had this area cleared of w**ds and brambles and wanted a low maintenance solution to stop it becoming overgrown again.
The area sits on top of a 6 foot dry stone retaining wall, and with the awkward access, much of the work had to be carried out from ladders. Care also had to be taken not to disturb the existing stonework.
We installed stakes and gravel boards along the front edge, offsetting them slightly from the wall to protect it.
With the levels being around 18 inches different from one side to the other, one of the boards was cut on a mitre and stepped down towards the access steps to keep everything looking neat.
Once the framework was in place, we laid a geotextile membrane and filled the area with 40mm plum slate.
We sourced and supplied all the materials to keep the job completely hassle free for the client, and chose the plum slate to give a nice contrast against the existing stone wall.
A tidy, low maintenance finish that should make maintenance much easier going forward.
