25 years practicing Architecture and Interior Design in Wales-
2 Competitions. We enjoyed working on two very different competitions- the first was an international competition set in Co. Cork Ireland, for the the proposed Martin Valley Sculpture Park. The competition brief was for the design of an Artist’s Residence, with public gallery and Workshop. The design focused on a layout of a flowing building that stepped down towards the River Martin, like a tributary, (see drawings). Great collaboration with Buro Happold, (when they were based at Cathedral Road in Cardiff), and Rigby Thorpe Quantity Surveyors. Both helped with the design of the triangular prefabricated roof sections. The Second was an invited competition for new headquarters for the Brecknock Wildlife Trust in Brecon at a site adjacent to Teatr Brycheiniog, between the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal and the playing fields. As well as offices for the Trust, the brief included a Visitor area and a workshop. Our proposal included a public path that cut across the site between the two proposed buildings, creating a new thoroughfare to link the Canal towpath to the playing fields.

Mundo architecture have been practicing in Wales for 25 years this April! We have been fortunate to frequently work on beautiful sites set in the landscape, often working with existing buildings, and some new build. This project sited at the heads of a spectacular valley near Llanwrtyd Wells, was an extension to an existing farmhouse. It started as a refurbishment to the oldest part of the house but the fabric of the walls had to be rebuilt. The accommodation provides a kitchen and dining space, loft bedroom and en-suite, and wet & dry rooms within a contemporary entrance hall. Photos: Dr Sue Barr

25 Years practicing in Wales: Architecture in the Landscape. Project: Hempcrete House which is currently on site, for Self build clients in Pembrokeshire. Collaboration has been an important part of this project- we have consulted with UK Hempcrete to design the Psi calculations, Hempcrete Cymru for U values of Hempcrete, Ty Mawr for specification of limecrete floor slab and foundations using Glapor insulation. Their combined material knowledge, as well as the research of our clients has helped the construction drawings for Building Regs, to prove the emerging qualities of Hempcrete.

25 Years practicing in Wales-Architecture in Landscape. Project: Refurbishment of Barn Conversion with two extensions and new stair. The Client wanted a better connection to the hidden views afforded by their home, the extension opened up an elevation and a calmness descended on the interior. Credit to the Structural Engineers Wider Arcada and R M Builders for working with the old stone walls to enable the opening.

We moved our practice to Wales 25 years ago in April 2001. To mark this we’re sharing our images of the Welsh landscape that hold and shape our projects. Grateful every day for these views that we live and work in. Project: Private Residential with two extensions which reorientated the rear of the property with views over the landscape and better access to daylight.
