The client asked us to replace the oven heating element and carry out an EICR, as the flat had been rented out. During our initial checks, we noticed that the existing consumer units were in poor condition and didn’t meet current regulations. We explained this to the client and recommended upgrading the consumer units and testing the whole installation to make sure everything would be safe and compliant.
The new consumer units now meet the latest standards, giving the property a modern and safe electrical setup.
Current regulations require Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) to be installed in consumer units unless a written risk assessment shows they are not needed. SPDs protect the installation and electrical equipment from voltage spikes caused by lightning, switching surges, or disturbances in the supply. This greatly reduces the risk of damage to appliances and increases the overall safety and reliability of the system.
We also installed RCBOs, which have several advantages over the older MCB + RCD arrangement. With RCBOs, each circuit has its own individual protection, so if there’s a fault on one circuit, it won’t cut off power to the rest of the property. This improves safety, reduces nuisance tripping, and makes the whole installation more efficient and reliable.
