The old gate at this customer's home had rotted through, ironwork barely holding it together. Time for a proper replacement.

We headed over to Wentwood Timber and picked out some sweet chestnut slabs. The tree itself originally came from the Forest of Dean, so the timber hasn't travelled far to reach us.
Sweet chestnut is one of our favourites for outdoor work: naturally durable, high in tannin, and it weathers beautifully without chemical treatment.

Back at the workshop, Mark and I jointed the frame, fitted the boards, sanded it back and finished with a natural oil.
Black ironmongery to suit the setting.
Built to last decades, not years.

We had a bit of company recently with Love Yew in our workshop restoring this old rocking chair.

I have to say (unbiased), she has done a fantastic job.
Really. Just look at the lovely wood grain she has been able to bring out.

A proper transformation on this staircase.

This was a banister replacement we completed last year, and it is still one of those jobs that stands out.

The original setup needed replacing, so we built and fitted a new banister section along with a matching wall handrail to make the staircase feel safer, stronger and far more in keeping with the space.

There was a fair bit of careful fitting involved on this one, making sure the lines worked properly through the landing and down the stairs, while still giving it a solid, tidy finish. It is the sort of job that looks straightforward when it is done well, but takes plenty of measuring, scribing, adjustment and patience to get right.

The darker spindles and rails worked really nicely against the wall colour too, which gave the whole stairwell a much more finished look.

We love this kind of work. Practical improvements that also completely change how a space feels.

From rough railway sleepers to front door statement pieces.

A recent customer wanted something solid and simple for their entrance. Not decorative. Not flimsy. Just two proper benches that would sit either side of the door and feel like they belonged there.

We built these using reclaimed railway sleepers for the legs and reclaimed scaffold boards for the tops. Every piece was sanded back, assembled in our workshop and finished with traditional linseed oil.

The result is strong, architectural and completely unique to this property.

All reclaimed timber. Natural finishes. Built to last.

As the year draws to a close, we just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who’s supported us, booked us, recommended us, shared our posts, or simply stopped for a chat throughout the year.

We hope you all had a joyful Christmas, whatever that looked like for you, and managed to take a bit of time to rest and reset.

The Build
This log store was originally built as a showcase piece for a recent craft market to demonstrate our build quality. It is constructed using quality timber supplied by Philip Jones Timber Products Ltd - Ebbw Vale and is designed to do exactly what a good log store should:

• ✅ Keep firewood dry: The angled, overhanging roof sheds rain effectively.
• ✅ Season your logs: Slatted sides and a raised base allow air to circulate freely.
• ✅ Built to last: Solid, sturdy construction that looks smart in the garden.
