Monday 22nd January. Big broad Beech tree bisecting two gardens in Blackheath. The brief: crown lift, selective thin and a three to four metre reduction across the whole canopy. The reason; to let more light into the two gardens. We are working in a strict conservation area on the Cator Estate so we had our work cut out to do justice to this big tree. No mobile elevated work platforms, just a very big climb. Notice the tree has no substantial wood in the centre for an anchor point. Also, it's slender form doesn't lend itself to supporting an arborist 3m from the canopy edge. It's going to be tough to produce that 'natural looking' reduction we always aspire to. See our next post for the results.

Today, after languishing in a pot for years in a client's rear garden, we offered to plant this little Monkey Puzzle in their large front lawn. There is nothing else there so this prickly little tree now has all the earth and sky that it needs to become a stately specimen. Feels great to rescue this tree which, one day, will hopefully give much pleasure to the homeowners and passers by.
