WINTER TIPS FOR AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP OWNERS
ASHP's are fast becoming a preferred choice of central heating for many homes, especially in areas where there is no mains gas and the most common alternatives are oil, LPG or electric storage heaters.
This intelligent system is often found on modern, well insulated homes and with no Co2 output, is one of the most greenest options currently on the market. But it is this time of year when they are working super hard to heat your home and this ultimately reflects in your electricity bill.
So what can be done to help?
1. STICK TO ONE TEMPERATURE
With an ASHP system, there will almost always be at least one thermostat in the property, usually on the wall of the entrance hall or main reception room. There should be options to program the temperature of your home for different periods throughout the day and week. Make sure that every time period is set to the same temperature. This stops the system from having to work so hard catching up everyday with your higher temperature setting.
2. USE YOUR SECONDARY HEATING SOURCE
ASHP's will heat your home and hot water comfortably but in colder conditions it has to consume more electricity to continue doing so effectively. This is why it is always useful to have a secondary heating source. A wood burner is a fine example as it is not reliant on electricity and can quickly increase the temperature of your home so that the thermostat doesn't kick in so often.
3. DON'T LET THE HEAT ESCAPE
It sounds obvious but try not to leave windows and doors open for long. If you prefer having the window cracked open in the bedroom then make sure that the internal door to that room is kept closed. The flow temperature of water in the radiators with an ASHP system will not be as hot as that with a gas or oil system, the radiators are in fact usually luke-warm to touch, so if you often leave doors and windows open then you may notice that the temperature reading on your thermostat isn't what you've set it to be.
