๐Ÿ‚The leaves are nearly down, just a few stubborn trees to keep us busy! The colours are still changing. The yellows are just so vibrant!
๐ŸซThe berries are magnificent at the moment, hopefully lasting the birds a while to stock up for winter.
๐Ÿฟ๏ธSquirrels have enjoyed their bumper crop of acorns and chestnuts this year (mast year).
๐—™๐˜‚๐—ป ๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜:squirrels bury their nuts, and often forget the location, contributing to regeneration of our woodlands! Thank you squirrels!

๐—™๐˜‚๐—ป ๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜: a group of hedgehogs is called a Prickle.
๐ŸRemember, it is good to let some leaves remain on your borders..or you will always be in a nutrient deficit! Itโ€™s natures mulch- so as long as it isnโ€™t too thick and blocking bulbs or air to get to the base of plants and shrubs, or laying up again fence slats (it can cause the wood to get damp and rot), leave them to naturally break down. ๐ŸŒธAnd donโ€™t forget- there are still wonderful plants to keep you cheery at this time of year. The leaves are falling, we are dodging chestnuts, the last few hedges are being tidied before the weather turns colder, and weโ€™re assessing what has survived the year!

โ€ขWhen/if you spot dying plants and shrubs in your garden, just be sure to double check with a scratch test (looking for green under the bark/skin and moisture) or a bend test (dead will snap, live will likely bend.)
It is also worth looking at the root ball if you decide it has given up the ghost- It may tell you a little about why it died. The area may have been too wet and the roots rotted; if the roots are brown, shrunken, and brittle, drought may have been the cause; also look for โ€˜nastiesโ€™ such as vine weevil that may have damaged the roots.

โ€ขLavender should realistically now have been cut back so any new growth can harden off before the winter. It can then be tidied further in early spring if needed. Keeping it pruned well prevents it getting overly leggy and woody.

It had also been a tough summer, due to continued winds and very changeable weather, and many gardens came into September with very little colour and growth, looking very Autumnal.
This year, we are in a similar position, with many gardens having struggled, due to the intense heat and hosepipe bans. Leaves are already turning and dropping here, down South.

๐Ÿ€With the weather changing and recent rain, weeds will resurge, so get on top of them, especially in patios and other sneaky unwanted places before we end up closing the back door and forgetting the garden again!
๐ŸŒฑNow is a good time to feed lawns, especially with the rain. Time it for a rain shower to leach it down to the roots, and it will start to help recover from the drought.
๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ›Give bird baths and water features a good scrub.
๐ŸŒฒMake a plan for hedges needing a trim, including conifer and laurel. Donโ€™t forget your summer flowering shrubs that have finished, and any lavender. And if you are calling someone in to do them for you- get them booked up soon, it is a very busy time of year!
๐ŸNow is also a good time to think about mulching your borders. With the weather sending rain our way, get that moisture locked in and help rejuvenate nutrients.

Youโ€™ve seen them โ€” those long, fuzzy, stringy bits all over your path or garden.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Tell us below โ€” what do YOU call them when you see them scattered everywhere?
A) Tree noodles
B) Woodland worms
C) Fluff spaghetti
D) ...Wait, thatโ€™s what those are?! ๐Ÿ˜…

๐Ÿ’ก Fun facts:
Theyโ€™re wind-pollinated โ€” no bees needed!
Some trees drop them en masse, causing what we like to call โ€œThe Catkin Crisisโ€ ๐Ÿงน
They can be composted! (If youโ€™re into that kind of thing ๐Ÿ˜Ž)

What a month! You would think that when things hot up, there would be less maintenance to do, but there are always things to do in the garden.
Keeping on top of weeds, cutting back shrubs that have finished flowering, looking after birds baths, and clearing up after the leaf and catkin drop!
We have been mulching, planting (drought tolerant plants) and looking in garden centres for inspirational colour.

On a side note, let us know if you are struggling with your box bushes, as we have successfully been treating and maintaining several over the last couple of years, battling the dreaded box moth. We have worked out an optimal treatment plan- if youโ€™re in our area, give us a call.

This months post was going to be titled Hot Tips- But scrub that, due to the changes in weather this week!
๐ŸŒผThere has been an immense amount of growth over the last few months. A priority if you only have a short amount of time to spend, would be to get roses and other climbers tied or supported, especially if there are more winds.
๐ŸŒผAs temperatures heat up again, we need to think carefully about what survived last yearโ€™s heat without too much damage, and what couldnโ€™t handle the extremes of the weather weโ€™ve had. Excessive wet, then windy, then dry!! ๐ŸŒง๏ธ๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒตโ˜€๏ธ
๐ŸŒผIf you are replacing dead plants and filling gaps, donโ€™t always be tempted to replace like for like โ€“ do a little research and try to find something better suited to the space.
๐ŸŒผSalvias and other drought tolerant plants like sedums, valerian, echinacea and geraniums can fill gaps in the border and need very little from you. Shrubs like Berberis , eleagnus and buddlejas can do ok with little water, once established.
๐ŸŒผNow would be a good time to mulch, after a good downpour: lock that moisture in!
๐ŸŒผDonโ€™t forget: water long and less frequently to encourage deeper roots, but keep an eye on containers or plants with restricted root space. Donโ€™t water in the heat of the day. (Check containers even if has rained!!)
๐ŸŒผAnd lastlyโ€ฆwhen dead heading roses, remember to snip back as close to a leaf as possible, or you increase the chance of disease/die back when the โ€˜stubโ€™ you left browns off.
