As expected at this time of year, we are non-stop supplying people with our usual high quality firewood. We have had unprecedented demand already, and are now hitting our reserve timber stacks, comprising almost exclusively of probably the best firewood available, Ash. This timber was felled at the end of last year and has been left in cord form where it has already dried considerably. Combine this with the timber being felled when the sap had stopped rising within the trees, and we have some great logs ready very quickly, but this stock, about 70 tons won’t last long.

Well it’s that time of year again and the logs are flying out.

Our prices this year are as follows

Mixed firewood

1.1 cubic metre truck load £75
2.5 cubic metre trailer load £170
5 cubic metre trailer load £320

Premium hardwood

1.1 cubic metre truck load £85
2.5 cubic metre trailer load £190
5 cubic metre trailer load £360

These prices all include VAT at 5% and delivery within 10 miles of Chelmsford for a truck or 2.5 metre load,
And 15 miles for a 5m trailer load.

For Many people, their log burner now becomes an ornament on the lounge, until needed to provide much loved heat. Now is the time to get your chimney swept. This will

Improve the efficiency of your burner as the exhaust flue is completely clean
Allow you to assess how dry your firewood was for the previous season, dry wood produces less soot than wet wood
Comply with your house insurance. All reputable chimney cleaners will provide you with a certificate should your insurance company need it.
Reduce the risk of a chimney fire, which you may not get an insurance pay out on if you cannot provide evidence of cleaning.
Extend the life of the flue pipe

It is also worth while checking the condition of the fire seals around the burner doors, if the seals are old they don’t seal fully. This makes your fire

Harder to control
Potentially able to leak smoke and more deadly invisible gases.

It is also worthwhile making sure you have a carbon monoxide alarm in the room with the burner, they don’t cost much but could save your life.

So while you don’t need your log burner, keep your chimney or flue in good order, and look after your fire.

Some of the prime ash firewood we will be processing later this year. If at all possible,we like to leave our round timber for a year before processing, gently start air drying. We are building are stocks of firewood after once again completely selling out last year. We are in the process of moving to a bigger site, which allows us greater storage capacity, and at present we have about 180 tons of timber, mainly ash and hornbeam we will be processing during the year before leaving the timber to air dry prior to delivery, and already the orders are coming in. We have had a very busy period with our logs this year, and are now refilling our stores with seasoned chestnut alder and maple, which is being mixed with ash, unseasoned. This isn’t a problem with ash as it is one of the few timbers that can be burnt immediately, although obviously with age it gets better. We are aiming to split a lot of our latest delivery so that it has a period of seasoning in our stores, and for next year we will have an increased supply of seasoned logs.

A large and difficult multi stemmed willow we are called in to fell. The work on other trees had been started by another local contractor but they sensibly felt this one was beyond them and rather than have a go asked us to assist. The tallest stem we put at about 60’, leaning over power lines, a phone line and a house. We used a technique called zip lining, which allowed us to slide the cut material away from the tree, landing about 50’ from the tree where it was safely dealt with.completed in one day by Martin whitehead (climber) David swift and myself.

A recent tree removal. this was a 70’ conifer at the rear junction of 4 gardens, over 3 sheds and 2 fences. Everything had to lowered under control by ropes, and the job was completed in under 2 days by David swift, Martin whitehead (climber) and myself.stump is about 3’ in diameter,and we estimate the whole tree weighed about 7 tons!

A recently completed clearance and returf job. Total area about 70m squared. Several stumps to pull out, 5 tons of additional soil to bring levels together, and a very large pile of green waste taken for recycling!
The are was so over grown you couldn’t see most of the site, but opening this area has had a big impact on the garden.
