The site has now largely been cleared, but some of the key buildings remain. Original page description:
I've recently heard that some of the buildings on the New Street Marconi site are proposed for demolition by Belway Homes. I think it's a real shame that we could lose even more of Chelmsford's history in the name of 'progress'. I've also heard that the council has granted permission earlier in
the year for this demolition to happen. I would love to see the site redeveloped used for new homes and businesses, but surely we can come up with a plan that includes the iconic buildings there. I don't know the exact details but I do know that there is an English Heritage listing application (477133) for the art deco Marconi House and the post-war modernist Building 720. A colleague of mine was contacted to try to gather support from qualified professionals. I may not be qualified in the field, but I am passionate and I would like to help in any way I can. As you may be unaware of the buildings on the site, I've uploaded some photos that were taken by Will Dutch, a Post Graduate student at Writtle School of Design (thanks again for the photos Will). The Landscape Architecture and Landscape Garden Design cohort visited the site last year and took many source photos for their project. When I got to see the photos I was amazed to see we had such different architecture in the town. My mum worked at the New Street site for many years so I'd seen the roadside Victorian building many times growing up. We've lost so much in the past, with the swathes removed during the development of High Chelmer and Parkway being prime examples, and I'd hate to lose even more, so I thought I'd try and help do something about it. And so, I'm going to be emailing English heritage as a born and bred Chelmsfordian, to offer my support to the listing application. I would love to see this site redeveloped in a way that includes these buildings of architectural interest and hope that this is the best opportunity to have my say. This listing is being looked after by [email protected] and the EH application reference number to quote is: 477133. I hope you agree, and if you do please email her as well or help in any way you can think of.
