WEST LAVANT, CHICHESTER
Renovation of historic properties often entails preserving existing historic floorboards and sourcing high-quality boards to supplement and complete the existing layouts.
At Lavant House, we started this process by measuring and mapping out the existing sizes and configurations of the existing floorboards and identifying the location and quantity of additional materials needed. As part of the conservation strategy, it is always important to select appropriately between reclaimed historic boards or hand-aged, engineered boards, considering the type of timber, available widths, and board thicknesses to maintain a flush surface throughout when installed.
Finally, blending the new boards with the old is key and it is important to carefully select a stain/wax or other desired finish appropriately. Offering sample boards against the old fabric is a worthwhile exercise. The sample boards can be later used to benchmark quality across the duration of the project.
