The roses are out and things are looking colourful despite the heat.

Iโ€™m doing very little apart from deadheading and keeping the pond and water bowls topped up. The veg plot and greenhouse tomatoes are being watered in the evening when needed but I am trying not to do it every day.

I will be doing a veg update in June, hope everyone has had a lovely bank holiday weekend ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐ŸŒธ.

If you have ants on your peony flower buds, itโ€™s nothing to worry about.

The buds secrete a sugary substance that the ants feed on. In return, they protect the peony from pests like aphids.

Once the flowers open, the ants will move on ๐Ÿœ ๐Ÿœ ๐Ÿœ ๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿฉท.

Hi all ๐Ÿ‘‹,

I am still planting things out at the moment, mostly veg (at the end of the post).

I have added strawflowers, lupins, sunflowers but have yet to do the cosmos or zinnias. Just be careful of night temperatures, use fleece or a pot over anything tender and remove in the morning.

The pond and water dish are being appreciated by the birds and mammals. I have stopped feeding the birds now until Winter which aligns with current RSPB advice to prevent disease spread.

May is usually a lovely month and pottering in the garden is one of lifeโ€™s simple joys away from all the negativity in the world ๐Ÿ’š. Enjoy, Dee ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒบ๐Ÿ™‚.

The warm weather has brought flowers on a little earlier than usual but the nights are still cold so am covering up tender things that are unplanted and still in the greenhouse (tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, courgettes, sweetcorn etc.) The tips of the potato leaves got nipped by frost but they will recover.

Over the last week I have planted out culinary peas, lettuces and parsley - all under mesh as pigeons love them. The runner bean wigwams are up and the tomato canes are ready in the greenhouse.

I waited for a cloudy day to apply slug nematodes to the veg plot. They really work and are a natural alternative to pellets. Need to keep the soil moist while they hunt out the slugs which have eaten many of my carrots I think ๐Ÿ™ˆ. I donโ€™t do this in the flower borders as there is a natural balance there. Beer traps and night collection are the other two methods I use.

Pop some water out for animals and top up ponds if you can. May will be a planting out month for most of my food crops. A few pics of the garden now including some wildlife. Please comment if you have any questions or want to share any garden pics ๐Ÿ˜Š.

A moody wisteria picture for you ๐Ÿ’œ.

Just a reminder that I will be at the CARESCO Centre Coffee Shop, Sawtry (PE28 5UX) this Friday from 9.00-11.30am.

Iโ€™ll have cottage garden perennials including lupins, achillea, asters, kniphofia, daisies, centaura, campanulas and more, tomatoes, cucumbers and small amounts of other veg available at very reasonable prices. I will be donating a % of any sales to the charity.

If I have anything left, I will detail those on the page and if youโ€™ve requested tomatoes, I will contact you next week re. their collection.

Hope to see some of you there, the cakes are ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿฐ too!

Dee

Thereโ€™s some lovely colour coming through now. Miraculously some later tulips have survived the ๐ŸฆŒ munching in the front!

The daffs and alliums have spread and got a little out of hand over the last few years, so I have been digging clumps up and replanting with about a quarter of the amount. This will give some breathing space to other perennials coming through.

The soil is surprisingly dry, so have needed to water pots, raised beds and veg planters. The wisteria is loaded with flower buds this year, so Iโ€™ll post that later in April. Well worthwhile doing the 2 stage prune.

Itโ€™s a good time to sow most other seeds (indoors/greenhouse) now, though hardy annuals and hardy veg can go in direct. My parsnips, carrots and beetroots are under thermacrop.

Bedding will be available in April but harden off carefully before leaving out permanently. Here are a few snaps of whatโ€™s out in my garden.

Happy gardening,
Dee ๐Ÿ™‚๐ŸŒธ

I hope youโ€™ve had a great Easter ๐Ÿฃ๐ŸŒž .

Iโ€™m in the shuffling phase of planting some hardier things out (peas, sweet peas, lettuce, spinach & onions) hardening off the next batch of plants (geraniums, lobelia, salvia, agapanthus, new potatoes, herbs) and sowing the next tender seeds (beans, squash, courgettes and sweetcorn).

Iโ€™ve topped up my houseplant compost and fed them with seaweed, pruned the forsythia, deadheaded bulbs, harvested rhubarb and done some weeding.

I will be having a stall at the CARESCO coffee shop, PE28 5UX 9.30-11.30 on 24/4 selling cottage garden perennials, a few tomatoes, cucumbers, veg etc. If you are free, do pop in and say hi ๐Ÿ™‚.

Itโ€™s looking warm mid week but donโ€™t be caught out by the cold nights. I still cover most veg plants during April if they are outside at night.

Love to know what youโ€™ve been up to!? ๐ŸŒน๐Ÿชป๐Ÿชด๐Ÿ…๐Ÿฅฆ๐Ÿง…๐ŸŒท๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿซ›, Dee

Some plants flowering in the garden now and a veg update at the end.

At the moment, Iโ€™m pricking out tomatoes and finishing some weeding on the wildlife side of the garden near the pond.

As we get in to early April, Iโ€™ll be sowing cucumbers indoors and a bit later squashes, sweetcorn, sunflowers & beans.

Remember to deadhead your daffs, it really does help with flowering the following year ๐Ÿ™‚. Gardeners World is on tonight and Beechgrove starts next week if you want something a bit more hands on.

What are you all doing? Feel free to comment with pictures, Dee ๐Ÿค—๐ŸŒบ
