Berrys Orchard

Berrys Orchard Berry’s Orchard is a real place but more than that it is a way of life.

This page is about our small orchard and how it regularly teaches us something new and how we are sharing this with others.

Peonies in full, fluffy bloom don’t like the sort of rain we’ve had today. It sure did rain heavily.

The ducks were happy though 😂 big

You’d think a mother duck would love these ducklings but no!
Duck Duck has spent 11 hours on the loose today. A surprisingly good flyer who will be having her wings clipped tomorrow!
She’s back now but it’s been a long day!

A busy couple of mornings here at Berry’s Orchard.
Duck Duck is sat on 16 eggs we have 5 ducklings so far. Probably won’t get many more but for the past three mornings I’ve had little surprises, they are so cute 🥰
It’s interesting to see how active they are very soon after hatching. They will be able to swim very soon.

Unlike the doves! Their babies are not so cute and that’s putting it mildly! I’m amazed at how dependant on the adult birds they are, they won’t be able to fly for a few weeks and so in the wild they must be very vulnerable to predators.

The contradictions of having a wildlife garden! I encourage the insects and won’t use pesticides but hate it when this happens to my baby plants.
I have been protecting the young courgettes from the snails by placing the pots on an ‘island with a moat’ but guess who forget to top up the water last night? Obviously snails can’t swim but can bide their time! Snails 1 Janet 0

Morning ritual ❤️

The greenhouse door gets opened - still a chance of frost so bring careful.

The doves fly out as soon as my back is turned apart from Chester who is sitting on more eggs. There is going to have to be some dove population control introduced soon.

The ducks don’t know how to exit gracefully or quietly, you’d think they’d been shut in for months!

Colin the Cockerel and his three girls exit the coop in a very leisure manner unlike the ducks.

Little Black Duck Duck is sitting on her eggs (lots of them!) and so hopefully we will have ducklings in a couple of weeks. It will be even noisier in the mornings then!

Poppy spends her time with me sniffing around the orchard to see where the fox had been overnight.

As it is international Dawn chorus day we set the alarm for 5 am this morning and went into the orchard to experience the wonderful show put on by nature which most mornings,in fact every morning, we miss!
I know I’m biased but what a lovely time to be in the orchard. My bird song identification app told me that the choral society consisted of the …
Robin
Wren
Blackbird
Thrush
Wood pigeon
Goldfinch

However, it didn’t identify Colin the cockerel who started up at sunrise!

Today my Dad would have been 106 years old.

For those of you that knew him, you would have known about his love of nature, his quiet determination to help wildlife and his willingness to share his knowledge with others. Dad was definitely ahead of the game. He grew organically (way before the word was fashionable), encouraged birds into the garden by building nest boxes out of odd bits of wood (recycling at its best) and shared his produce with people all around the village he loved (community spirit). This way of life planted a seed (no pun intended!) and has totally inspired the creation of Berry’s Orchard 🍏

If Dad could spend an hour back with us he would see that his apple trees are not pruned to his standard, the rows of brussels have been replaced by herbs and the grass has been left to grow to encourage wildflowers; but he would approve.

Today we will be in the orchard and this evening we will raise a glass to Sid, wish him a happy 106th birthday and be thankful for all the memories and all he taught us. ❤️
