ST JAMES’S STREET (WESTMINSTER, LONDON). Behind London’s grandiose facades is an unseen world of lightwells, ceramic brickwork and bewildering extensions and services. Designed by MJP Architect and Short & Associates for world renown wine merchants , this gleaming rear elevation cheered us up on a gloomy day. Peaking above the parapets, this glimpse of white masonry and playful openings suggests a wonderful reworking of traditional lightwell.

We spotted this wonderful wood working shelter at Standen. The honest and legible frame is perfect, and we love the pragmatic detailing (especially the simple boarded gutter supported on projecting struts). Standen (East Sussex) is the most wonderful place. Designed by architect Philip Webb, this country home is cared for the by the National Trust and is an incredible archive of arts and crafts design. We suspect, however, this little shelter is missed by most visitors!

From traditional breathable mortars, to modern cements, burnt lime (‘quicklime’) is the glue of the building industry. Local lime kilns were found throughout the country, however the Victorian building boom required quicklime in vast quantities. The Dorking Greystone Lime Company started excavating lime in 1865, creating a vast hillside quarry. Today the kiln tower, located at Betchworth on the North Down’s Way, is an imposing relic of this industrial past. Whilst nature has reclaimed the landscape, the distinctive quarry workings remain very much visible.

A sobering reminder of how fragile heritage is, and how powerful natural forces can be. Birling Gap (East Sussex) is well know for cliff erosion, and slowly the sea is reclaiming this wonderful terrace of 1800’s coast guard cottages. Several structures have already been lost, exposing underground pipe work and walls at the cliff head.

3/3 … The historic Threshing Barn is an auditorium, art space and restaurant (with some amazing lunch!). Sensitively converted, the historic brick and flint walls are left expressed. The new roof and simple screed floor are contemporary, but subtle and certainly not in competition with the historic fabric. We love the views through to the adjacent CLT structure - A wonderful transition from the past to the present

2/3 … We can’t post Charlston’s bohemian interiors, but we can share the wonderful 2016 art centre by London based architects Jamie Forbert in collaboration with conservation specialists Julian Harrap Architects. Accommodating new exhibition and performance spaces, the striking structure sits comfortably amongst Charleston’s historic farm buildings. The low range avoids competing with the agricultural surrounds, yet the asymmetrical roof and timber cladding remain unapologetically contemporary. Internally the CLT structure contrasts with the adjacent rudimentary and vernacular structures. Whist of a different time and technology, the robust CLT shares a simplicity and honesty with its older neighbours
